In a brief moment of crystalline fear, her eyes met those of the beast and her heart nearly stopped.
She began to tremble hard, instincts screaming to run. To scream. To do anything that might draw attention to her impending doom.
But she couldn't move, the brutal combination of unadulterated terror and frigid temperatures had paralyzed her.
In her mind she relieved her life, memories flashing behind her vision as the sound of her pulse roared in her ears. This was it.
With a sound between a snarl and a hiss, the demon arched its back and leaped forward, opening its jaws into an open grin as it lunged across the space between them, and time slowed.
For a moment she could see down its throat. There was no escaping this, she couldn't move or even shed the tears that had welled in her eyes, and a sense of acceptance fell over her as she covered her face.
She could hear the pounding of its feet as the demon drew closer, feel the icy chill of its breath. (This is it...) An image sprang unbidden into her mind, a memory of stargazing with Bate.
CRASH!!
All at once there was a mighty clap of sound, it shook all of reality with such force that her ears were left ringing, and the atmosphere became heavy.
Warm air wrapped around her like a blanket, warding off the demon's cold as a sense of safety washed over her, and through her shock she became aware of something new.
(... Rain?) The distinct smell of fresh rain, clear and unmistakable. A thunderstorm?
