With a loud, trilling cry, the bird sprang to life! She jumped, falling backwards in surprise as her little friend took off in a flurry, and its panicked chirping drove the other birds of the forest into alarm.
Heart beating louder than their many wings she looked up, seeing several birds follow the first into the sky as they echoed its wild song of terror, and she scrambled back to her feet and turned.
There, emerging from the bushes, was a huge beast! The temperature continued to drop as it exhaled, its breath creating a visible mist that sparkled like the ice that had trapped the bird on the ground.
All too clearly she understood that this monster was responsible for the cold, "No... No...!" it had captured the bird and left it in the open, to lure in larger prey.
Too late, she realized she'd fallen for the trap, and she took an instinctive step back, "D-Demon Beast!" but she could move no further.
As the frosty breath reached her she stood frozen in place, the temperature still falling rapidly as the towering reptile looked her over. Fear rooted her to the spot and she couldn't run, couldn't even scream for help.
Now she really wished she'd thought to tell someone, before coming out here.
