Through Sad Eyes
Chapter. 2
As low as Dirt
"Where is he!!!!" Ramset shouted, causing the elder in the waiting room to jolt in surprise.
The Sasuke came rushing in, tears in his eyes as he dashed to Bate. "Is he okay? What happened?!! Is he-" The Sasuke stopped when he noticed all the blood covering Bate. He let out a loud gasp; cupping his hands over his mouth in shock, and taking several staggering steps back.
"Ramset, I haven't heard anything from Mends yet so don't think the worse, alright? I got him here as soon as I found him." Bate spoke in a soft voice and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder as he led him to one of the chairs. “We'll wait together, okay?”
After much hesitation, Ramset quietly followed and didn't speak a word aside from an occasional sniffle or two. Bate wanted to say something to ease his nerves, but he, too, was unsure how Gravel was doing. He was unresponsive when he found him; collapsed on the floor in a large puddle of blood. The memory is still fresh for Bate, and just thinking about it couldn’t help but make him feel uneasy. Never has their small group suffered such injuries like this. Normally it would be minor, nothing too major to the point where it may be a life or death situation. Bate knew it could go either way at this point.
The long afternoon eventually fell into the late night. Despite Ramset’s plea to any of the nurses who would pass by, there was still no update. Ramset refused to calm down; getting up from his seat every now and then to anxiously pace the room before Bate stood up to reassure him. Bate eventually got some support when Gordon arrived much later. After calming down, and cleaning up Dragato and Falspar, Alba took over while he headed to the hospital. With the two of them by his side, Ramset relaxed significantly. Bate would stay by his side, while Gordon would leave occasionally to get them something to drink, as well as a hot rag to clean the blood off of Bate. It was a taxing night for sure, but not one refused to leave until they got the reassurance they needed.
It wasn't until the clock struck 3AM did Mends finally appear from the doorway. Fatigued clearly showed on his face, the elder greeted the trio before addressing the issue on hand.
"Sir Gravel is lucky to be alive. If it had been any later, he would have succumbed to his injuries." He stated. "That being said, there are some things I would like to discuss. Sir Ramset, if you could follow me, please.” He spoke, motioning him to his office.
Ramset anxiously got up without a word. He looked back at the others who were still sitting before finally heading to the back room. Once Bate and Gordon got up to follow, Mends stopped them from entering.
"I need to have a word with him alone." Mends stated. "You two are free to go home."
"W-what?" Bate spoke. "We're his friends, too. Why can't we-"
"This is confidential information I'm not allowed to share with you, Bate. IF Sir Ramset would like to relay what I've said, then he is free to do so. But for now, you will not be allowed to join us." He did not wait for Bate's remark and closed the door.
Bate and Gordon stared at the door for another minute to process what happened before finally turning around to head back home. They weren't exactly sure what Mends had said to him that night, but if it was something truly important, they knew Ramset would tell them.
—--
Several days have passed, and from what Bate heard, the recovery itself.…wasn't smooth. Gravel is known for being stubborn; never liked showing weakness, never liked asking for help. So it didn’t really surprise him when Ramset said he ran off several days later to recover on his own. When he and Gordon tried to visit, Ramset told them he didn’t want any visitors; even going as far as sealing off his cave with his ruby pillars.
The pair eventually learned why. It was from the conversion he and Mends had when Gravel was first admitted. Ramset informed Bate and Gordon that he’s sustained a bad head injury. Bate expected the worse, and worried if he’d be okay by himself alone in the canyons. Though once he found out it was because he had to keep his helmet off for the next several months, and he didn’t want anyone to see him without it, the elder relaxed a bit.
“Huh….” Bate scratched his head. “Y’know, I never really thought about it. But now that you’ve brought it up, I’m quite curious.”
"Yeah, only a few have seen him without it. Grav told me if a Bukiset is seen without it, they could face severe consequences. It has something to do about respecting their clan's history, so he never takes it off in public because of it. He’s left North Nova long ago, but he wants to uphold his clan’s traditions."
"I guess that's why he left the hospital so early. I understand it's a tradition deeply rooted to his clan, but if it's going to negatively effect his health, surly there's an exception to it."
'I'd rather not heckle him about it, especially during his recovery. He's already feeling off since Gordon insisted letting Alba treat him."
"Yeah?" He slightly smiled in amusement at the very thought of it. It just seemed like yesterday he had Alba and Ellie helping him with his own recovery. "How's that been going?"
"I always knew she had nerves of steel- she fell in love with Gordon for Nova's sake, but I still wasn't prepared to see how well Grav behaved. He would never had done it for anyone else, so I'm grateful Gordon recommended her for it. His wounds would've taken much longer to heal if not. It’s still going to take several months, but after seeing all the get well gifts he got from Dragato and Falspar, I think part of him wants to recover faster. I guess that's why he's allowing Alba to see him.
"Oh, speaking of which." Bate got up from his seat in the dining room to pick up several parchments of paper in the living room. He placed them on the table in front of Ramset before taking his seat again. "More get well gifts for Gravel. Meta, Arthur, and Nonsurat made some drawings as well. Oh, and here..." Bate slipped him a white envelope. "From me and Gordon."
Ramset looked through a few of the drawings their students drew, and couldn't help but smile from it all. "Thanks, Bate. I'll be sure to give it to him when I visit. I know he doesn't express it easily, but he truly appreciates it."
Ramset then glanced at the clock hanging near the hallway, and pushed himself away from the table. "I think Gordy and Alba should be returning soon. I guess that's my cue to see how he's doing. Tell them I said hi, will ya, Bate?
"Sure thing." Bate nodded, getting up to bid farewell to the other as he dashed out the door.
---------------------------
Ramset's used to running long distances; done so ever since he escaped from Central. So naturally it didn't take long for him to reach Gravel's home. He didn't hear or see any sign of Alba, so he entered without fear of interrupting her work.
Normally he would call out to Gravel in pure excitement and bliss, but since his incident, he's been quieter just in case he was resting. He walked in the dark cavern, past several ruby pillars, and to his surprise he saw him up. Bandages adorned most of his body- legs, chest, but more specifically- his head. Gravel had his back turned to him, and he didn't speak even though Gravel knew he was right behind him.
"Heya, Grav." Ramset spoke, walking a bit closer as he held up the gifts. "I got something for you! Check it out! More gifts from your adoring fans~!" His voice had a childish air it.
When Gravel didn't react, he spoke once more. "Hey, c'mon! We'll look at them together! You even got something from Bate and Gordon too!”
"Um...You could just leave it right there, Ram. I'll read it later...."
Ramset's smile slowly turned to a frown when he noticed the dramatic shift in his behavior. The last time he brought a handful of gifts, Ramset could see the excitement and happiness in his eyes. He was so eager to see and read everything! His spirits were high, and it put Ramset's mind at ease knowing his friend was taking his recovery well. But now seeing him completely avoid and ignore him caused the Sasuke to be just a bit concerned. Just what in Nova happened?
"Hey, Grav?" He softly called out. He walked closer to the other to the point where he was standing right next to him. He saw his head slightly move, but Gravel still didn't look back. Ramset took a seat next to him, and set the piles of parchment in the middle. He didn't show him any since he wanted to know what was bothering him first.
"Gravel? What's bothering you?”
To this, Gravel finally reacted. Though not in the way Ramset expected.
"Gravel, ay? I haven't heard you call me that in years." He said, finally looking his way. His face had a small, weak smile; eyes filled with pain and hurt. It only lasted a few seconds before he focused on the floor again. "Do....you know why I was given that name?" He spoke. His voice was low, and it cracked several times when he spoke.
Ramset did not speak, but look at Gravel in bewilderment as to why he was saying such a thing. Several minutes passed where they didn't exchange a word, and it wasn't until something clicked with Ramset did Gravel speak before he had the chance to.
"Can you imagine being named after something as pathetic as dirt?" He spoke before looking elsewhere to hide the pained look on his face. “I didn’t matter in their eyes. I was treated like a mistake the moment I was born. And HE made it perfectly clear what he saw me as. I...was nothing."
He lifted his hand. It was covered in bandages, but that didn't stop him from lifting it to his mouth and taking a bite to draw blood from his palm. He placed his hand firmly on the ground, and Ramset watched as a small ruby pillar emerged from the dirt.
"My sister, the prodigy who is able to summon the coveted diamond- and then there is her brother...the one who is cursed with the blood ruby. The only stone that requires blood for it to be summoned." He clutched his hand and held it close to his chest. “ I was only 5 when I was strong enough to finally summon them. I was so proud, so happy to be like my sister, to be like my family. But once /he/ saw it, I was sentenced to death--- for who would ever want to have a bad omen walking amongst them."
Gravel reached for his neck on impulse where faded scars wrapped around his neck could be seen, and after several more moments of silence Gravel took a sharp breath as he forgot the breath for a moment. Painful memories started to resurface.
"I was spared thanks to Mara, but they never let me forget what I was in their eyes. " He eyed the floor, and reached down to grab a handful of dirt. "My life is as worthless as the dirt below us, he told me. Always was, always will. I might as well have a name to reflect that, he said."
Gravel let the last bits of sand trickle out of his hand, and he finally looked back at Ramset who looked like he was on the brink of tears.
“Grav…I….I’m sorry. If I knew it made you uncomfortable, I-"
“Shhh, it’s okay, Ramset.” Gravel reached over to wipe the tears forming in his eyes. "It's fine, there's a reason why I'm telling you this."
He took a moment to gather his bearings before talking.
“When we met, and you started to call me ‘Grav’ instead….it felt different. I was never reminded of my past. When I think of that nickname, I think of you. I think of Kalmari. I don't have to worry about what I am, or who I am.” He then paused for a moment. “You're the only one who called me that- everyone else didn't. I know it's not their fault, but when I would hear it, a part of me was reminded of my old home. And...I hated it. I've felt that for so long but recently, I'm starting to have a change of heart.”
“Change of heart...?”
“Hm…” He nodded, looking down below at the lake in front of them. Happy memories of his students calling out to him, yearning for his approval and attention. It hits a different way than it did back then. “Maybe…names can hold different meanings to it. When they call out to me, it’s not out of spite or malice. They…see me as their mentor, their protector. Someone they can trust. Maybe…my name can reflect that instead. I could be the mentor I should've been from the start instead of the bitter, angry mistake my clan saw me as.”
To this, a smile slowly started to form on Ramset's face.
“Y’know, I think two certain warriors would like that as well.” Ramset leaned on his side to comfort the other. “I see. So, that's what's been bugging you today, huh?"
“Well…umm..yeah...." He gave a small nod. It’s not easy for him to move past his scars. How could he even begin to do so? His name was a constant reminder of that he represented in his clan’s eyes
But…then he recalled a conversation he had with Alba while she was tending to him. How she met Gordon- about his past. About Bate's past. How they were frowned upon in the beginning. Judged and chastised for what they stood for. Breaking away from the norm of society, ignoring the traditions and rules rooted within the town they called their home. Not fearing who looked at them differently, not caring what the world thought of them. And….how they ultimately found happiness in the end. Could…he really have that as well? Or better yet, is he strong enough to do so?
“I..think I’m starting to finally realize who I am, and what I am to others. Who I see as my family, and what it means to be part of one."
Ramset could clearly make out a small smile on his face, and he returned one as well. Intertwining his hand with his, Gravel spoke once more.
“Well..maybe...." He cast his eyes across the cavern where his helmet was placed. Can he really do this? Can he break away from the traditions of his clan; a clan who ridiculed him, isolated him, and even tried to kill him for being different? "A part of me thinks so....but....another part still hesitates. Scared, terrified...worried what the outcome would be."
"We've all come from different walks of life, Grav. Each of us faced our own struggles along the way to get here.” He sat up and finally reached over to grab one of the drawings made by their students. “ In the end, we all made the decision to move past our scars and start a new chapter. And there are those who, if you allow it, want to be part of that new life as well. Dragato, Falspar, Bate, Gordon....”
Ramset handed him one of the papers. It was a group drawing made by all five of their students; a drawing of them swimming, having fun. And a picture of him- in the center of it all.
Just what is this feeling? Is....this what true acceptance feels like?
Bandages scribbled, presents drawn everywhere, and right above the drawing were letters that caused him to break down in tears.
"We miss you, Teacher Gravel! Get well soon!"

-The End-

-----------------
Gravel hits a crossroad in his life.
His old home where he was constantly judged and ridiculed for what he is, and hides his face in shame to cover past scars. And now the present, his home in Kalmari. Surrounded by other unique beings with equally unique pasts. Each choosing Kalmari at their final destination to start a new chapter in their life.
Gravel, are you starting to realize it yet? Who your real family are? Will you allow yourself to walk away from your past and allow others into your world? Or will you continue to hide and mask your feelings to those who reach out to you?
The end is near. I hope what ever decision you make, you'll be truly happy in the end.
Fun fact: Ramset has never called him Gravel in the comics. (Unless I messed up, and it slipped my mind. I'll have to double check now. XDDD)
Also, Alba is one of the few who has seem him maskless. Gravel was a biiit stubborn at first, but he eventually allowed it. Gordon keeps an eye, and protects Alba when they travel to his home, but he waits outside. Others who have seen him include- Ramset, Mends...and a few of the nurses. But other than that, the main cast have not seen him. >v<
