The old warrior truly did care for the little one, but stopped watching over him when he saw how clingy Meta was becoming. Because he was still recovering from the loss of his previous family, Bate was too afraid of becoming attached, and ended up letting him go with another caretaker. He still quietly watches from afar, however. u///u
There was even a point in time where Mends wanted Bate to adopt him!
