Son of Arthur
Chapter. 6
"Remember, Atticus." Arthur spoke as both waited for Bate to arrive. "He is your teacher for today, not your grandfather. If he says something that hurts your feelings, or raises his voice, it's only because he doesn't want you to get hurt, okay? He was the same with me and I don't want you to be scared or afraid of him afterwards." He explained since Bate could be a bit harsh during his lectures.
"Don't worry, Daddy! Ooujii says it's gonna be lots of fun!" Atticus reassured him.
"Well...'fun' is a bit of a stretch." Arthur sheepishly laughed. "But it will be quite an experience to be training under him. I hope you'll listen to what he says and take it to heart."
"I will!" He smiled and eagerly waited for the elder. When he showed up several minutes later, Atticus happily dashed to the puff and hugged him.
"It seems like someone's eager to start today's lesson." Bate smiled when he saw the Leo's excitement.
"Mhhm!" He hummed and went back to his dad while Bate set several items he brought with him near the large tree next to him. Atticus saw, and inched closer to the cooler.
"Just a little something when we're done with our lesson." Bate spoke, and headed towards Arthur.
"Teacher Bate, thank you for taking the time to train Atticus. I can't wait to see what you have in store." He spoke in a formal tone since he still saw him as his teacher. Bate waved it off and motioned the young Leo away from the cooler so they could begin. Arthur sat under the tree to watch the lesson, but moved aside in surprise when Bate sat under the tree as well.
"U-uhhh...Teacher Bate?" Arthur quietly spoke only to be drowned out by Bate's voice.
"Atticus, sit under the tree and let me take a look at your wings for a moment." Bate spoke. Atticus gave a nod and sat next to the elder while he started to inspect them. He let out a giggle or two when Bate began stretching, and starting to gently massage certain parts of the appendage. Arthur silently watched, but eventually spoke up when several minutes passed.
"Teacher, what are you doing? I thought you were going to teach him."
"I will, don't you worry about that." He spoke as he continued to stretch his wing. "He has not used his wings as much like you and I. I don't want them to start cramping while we're flying, so I'm just massaging them a bit to relax his muscles. If I were to train him off the bat, he wouldn't be flying for very long."
"Huh, I don't ever remember you doing this to me when my wings were sore. All you did was tell me to stretch for an extra five minutes and that was it." Arthur mumbled, feeling a bit cheated.
After several more minutes, Bate was finally finished. He stood up as well as Atticus, and headed out into the field.
"Just for a small warmup, how about you fly to that stone pillar right in front of us?" Bate said and used his cane to point to the rock that was only a few feet away. "Think you're up for it?"
"Yep!" Atticus' wings fluffed up as be began flapping them. Arthur watched as his son took off, albeit quite slowly, before heading to one of the pillars.
"What the- wait a minute...." To his disappointment, Bate picked the closest rock that only took (even by foot) a measly 10 seconds to get to. The warrior couldn't help but groan as he stood up to head to Bate.
"Teacher, how about letting him fly to the edge of the training field or something?"
"That's way too far, Arthur. I'm starting him off with the basics." He spoke as Atticus flew back a few seconds later.
"Did you see me?!! How'd I do?" The Leo spoke once he landed.
"Very good, Atticus." Bate praised as he bent down to pat him on the head.
"Was I fast like you?!!"
"Very much so." He said, which greatly boosted the Leo's motivation. "Now, how about the rock behind it?" He pointed to the other rock a bit father and ignored Arthur's mumbles of babying his son. Atticus nodded and took off once more. Arthur gave a sigh and annoyingly crossed his arms.
"Teacher Bate, when I meant train my son, I meant, I dunno...training him with a bit more bite."
"Arthur, you can't expect him to be flying like us in only 30 minutes. Things like this takes time. Besides, you have to consider his endurance. I don't want him falling ill, so doing these basic exercises will help me determine how long his lessons will be." He said as both watched him fly back and land. Bate took notice of his headpiece and saw it was starting to shift colors. He keeled down and heard Atticus slightly panting, so the old warrior picked up the tired toddler and headed back to the tree to rest."
"You did very good, Atticus." Bate spoke as he set him down.
"I....did?" He said, a bit embarrassed he was already tired.
"Yep, in fact." Bate dragged the cooler next to them, and pulled out a popsicle for him. "I think you deserve a little treat."
"A treat? Really?!!!" His eyes shined in joy.
This time, Arthur's wings hit the floor in absolute shock. Not even 10 minutes in, and he already gets a treat AND praise?!! This was the total opposite of how he treated all of them when they were younger. The way Bate was treating Atticus right now, Arthur wouldn't even call this a lesson, but just a fun, afternoon outing.
"Yay, O-oujiii!" Atticus cheered, and grabbed the frozen treat from the elder as he cooled off in the shade.
"After our rest, how about trying to fly to the third pillar." Bate asked.
"Okay!" He smiled and leaned against the elder as he continued to nibble on his popsicle.
While the two were enjoying themselves, Arthur could only shake his head in disbelief. Atticus was right, Teacher Bate's lecture really was the epitome of "fun."
