Son of Arthur
Chapter. 5
"I helped momma plant some roses yesterday- oh! And I watered some of the flowers in the greenhouse too!!"
"It seems like you were quite a busy bee while I was away, hm?" Arthur spoke as both walked out of the hospital to head to the store.
"Hm!" Atticus happily nodded and held on to part of Arthur's wing while he was following the trail. "D-do you think when I'm older, I'll be able to run the shop, too?!"
"A-ah...." Arthur's voice trailed off when he heard that. "I...I'm sure she would love an extra pair of hands on the side, but...."
"Huh?" Atticus curiously looked up when he paused. "But what?"
The words of Mends continued to replay in the back of Arthur's mind. Of course, he truly loved Atticus, and he didn't mind him helping his mother from time to time, but that was the thing- he was always with Petta. He barely had any time to Atticus, and when he does, it's always revolving around plants or flowers. He could understand why he's become so fascinated in them, but he'd love to have something the two of them could bond over without the need of his wife's business. His personal training regimen he specifically made for Atticus would have to wait for now, but....maybe in the mean, time they could do something else? Maybe something a little less vigorous?
"Hey, Atticus." Arthur smiled and reached over to pick him up. He pointed to the last tree at the end of the path, and tightly held on to his son. "Wanna see how fast your dad can get to that tree?"
"Yeah!" The little Leo happily clutched onto his gloves as his dad flew past the winding rows of trees at a remarkable speed. Once Arthur was safely on the ground, he set Atticus down and beamed when he saw how happy his son was.
"You're so fast, daddy! You're just like Oouji!!" He said.
"Well, your Grandfather was the one who trained me to fly." He said as both started walking to the plaza. "And y'know...if you want, I can help you fly just like Ooujii too!"
"Wha-Really?!!" He smiled, but lowered his enthusiasm slightly, "B-but...no heights, right?" He said since he was greatly terrified of them unless Arthur or Bate held him.
"If it makes you uncomfortable, then we can stay low. We'll just practice on your speed, so nothing above my height, alright?"
"Alright!" He said and agreed with his father.
"Great! We can train in the morning, and then you can have the rest of the day helping your mother with her plants. Sounds good?"
"Hm!!" He nodded and pushed the door of his mothers shop when they finally arrived to tell her the news.
"Momma, Momma!!" Atticus called out, and gasped in excitement when he saw Bate there too. "Ooujiii!!!"
"Hello, Atticus." The elder smiled, and couldn't help but laugh when he saw how excited he was. "Seeing how springy you are, I'm guessing your checkup went well?"
"Even better!!" He eagerly tugged on Bate's wing and pointed to Arthur who just walked in. "Daddy said he's gonna teach me how to fly super fast like you!!"
"He said what?" Petta's tone didn't bode well when Arthur reached them, and she looked at Bate with much concern before focusing on her husband again. "Arthur, what did I tell you about-"
"Don't worry, dear. It's not like the training I did with Kirby. I just though it'll be a good way for us to spend some quality time together."
"It'll be fun!" Atticus chimed in and faced the elder. "Right, Ooujii?"
Bate kept silent, though gazed at both Arthur and Petta to take in each reaction. Eventually, he gave a weary sigh since he knew what Arthur was trying to do.
"I'm not sure what type of training you have in store, but I hope you consider if his body is up for such a thing. Just because it's not as taxing as training with, let's say- Gordon, doesn't mean flying is an easier option. It can be just as difficult, and I'm sure you out of everyone knows this.
"It...won't be like your training, Teacher Bate." He slightly faltered when he didn't agree with him. "He won't wear the weights like the ones you gave me, so he doesn't have to worry about straining himself. I was just thinking Atticus could fly around the training area to start, and eventually work his way up from there. He's...not going to be running or constantly dodging obstacles, so he'll be fine."
"Huh..." Bate leaned his cane on the counter and crossed his arms when he wasn't getting it. "You know very well I've been flying even before you were born, Arthur. I can easily fly laps without weights, armor, or anything pulling me down, but there's still the chance of me falling ill if I'm not careful. Being an expert doesn't make me invincible from incidences like everyone else. It doesn't matter if your training isn't as rough as mine, but if your student, or in this case, your son, isn't able to do these things without overheating and injuring himself, then maybe you should let him do something else in the mean time, and wait."
Even though Bate's tone wasn't as harsh like Mends, he took it much more personal. He thought out of everyone, Bate would be ecstatic, but instead....it was the complete opposite.
"S-so...does that mean I'm not gonna fly like you?" Attiucs frowned a bit, disappointed from the less than enthusiastic response from everyone.
"Of course you will, Atticus." Bate tried to lighten up after scolding Arthur. "But maybe in a few years when you're older."
Atticus was never the one to doubt his grandfather, so with a disappointed nod, he agreed. Petta couldn't help but tense up when she saw how sad not only her husband was, but Atticus as well. She didn't think saying no to his idea would get him so glum. It's not that she doesn't want him to spend time with Arthur, but doing something that could ultimately cause severe injuries to her son keeps her on edge. She never thought Atticus would even want to train in the first place since walking to his garden tuckers him out, but by the look on his face, maybe he actually does. So with a weary sigh, Petta decided to cut in.
"I suppose.... maybe a small session wouldn't hurt."
And like that, Atticus, along with Arthur, eye's lit up when they heard that.
"Only for half an hour just to see if Atticus likes it, AND only if Bate's the one lecturing." She looked at the elder to see if he approved, which he did.
"YAY! Thank you, Momma! Thank you Ooujii!!!" He ran to hug the Puff.
"Of course." Bate lifted his mask and smiled at the toddler. "We'll start first thing in the afternoon. We'll use the training field where I used to teach your father, so don't forget." He spoke and decided to leave to prepare for tomorrow.
"I won't! See you tomorrow O-oujiii!" He waved and went back to his father's side when he left.
"Oh, I'm so proud of you, Atti!" Arthur picked up his son and nuzzled his cheek. "Teacher Bate will teach you everything he knows. You're going to be a fantastic flyer by the end of this, I know it." He said, extremely excited that his son was finally going to experience the joys of training, even if if he wasn't going to personally do it this time around.
"It seems like you were quite a busy bee while I was away, hm?" Arthur spoke as both walked out of the hospital to head to the store.
