-'Till Midnight-
(Kirby / Tula / Cellic / Atticus)
"Grandfather Bate, Grandfather Bate!!!”
Kirby cut into the conversation he was having with his Aunt and handed him a popper wrapped in colorful foil. Behind Kirby were several of his cousins holding smaller ones.
“Tula gave us a bunch of poppers so we can practice once it hits New Years! Wanna try them with us?”
“Yeah, it’ll be fun!!” Tula chimed in. “Dad and I spent all weekend making them!”
“Mama, can we practice with O-oujii, please?” Atticus asked the elder Leo who was originally talking to him before they barged in.
“Of course you may.” She picked up her son and pecked him on the cheek before setting him down with Bate. Petta smiled as she watched the children usher the elder to the other room. He could barely wave goodbye before being dragged away.
----
“Okay, 3…2…1…” Kirby counted down as everyone readied their popper.
“Happy New year!!!”
The room filled with loud bangs, and confetti littered the whole room. Cheers were heard, and the kids happily giggled from the excitements of finally being old enough to celebrate.
“I can’t wait! It’s gonna be great, isn’t it?!!” Kirby is the first to speak in the midst of all the laughter.
“It won’t be long now!” Tula glanced at the clock which read 8PM. “4 more hours, that’ll be easy!!”
“Yeah!” Cellic nodded in agreement. “Gordo’s don’t need sleep so this will be super easy for me!”
“I…never really stayed up late unless someone woke me up, but if everyone’s gonna do it, then I’ll try too!” Atticus spoke in a determined voice since he didn’t want to be left out.
“Grandpa Bate, you’ll wake us up if one of us falls asleep, right?” Kirby toddled to the elder and joined Atticus who is perched on the top of Bate’s head. There wasn’t enough room, so he placed himself on one of his pauldrons. “You’ve stayed up a bunch of times, so you can help us stay up too!”
Bate could only smile from the boisterous behavior. "I wouldn’t want to force any of you to stay up. Sleep is very important, especially at your age. Remember, there’s always next year."
“Awww, Dad said the same thing too…” Kirby huffed. “But we’re not babies anymore. We can do it, just watch!!”
“Yeah!” Tula joined in.
“No problem!!” Cellic also agreed.
“Yup!” Attics cheered.
“Atticus!!” Petta called from the hallway. Her soft footsteps got louder with each step, and the silhouette that was cast on the hallway wall got bigger and bigger until the Leo finally appeared. Atticus hid behind his cousins once she saw her holding several items.
“Sorry to interrupt all the celebration in here, but it’s time to take your medicine, dear.”
“B-but…” He inched back. This time he tried to shield himself under Bate’s wings. “C..Can’t I skip it tonight? Please?”
“Oh, Atticus.” She mused and grabbed the struggling child from the folds of Bate’s wings. “You don’t want to get sick, do you?”
“No, but…I”ll be fine. I don’t even feel sick~!” He insisted.
“Yes, and let’s keep it that way, shall we?” She giggled.
Before he had a chance to protest, Bate decided to cut in to help ease his troubled grandson.
“How about I come along and keep you company?” Bate intervened since he knew Atticus would likely give Petta a hard time. It was a celebration, after all. For a child, the last thing they would want is to be cooped in a room while everyone else is having fun.
Atticus started to speak, but eventually stopped and sighed in defeat. The little Leo nodded and sadly watched as the distance between him and his cousins got further and further until he eventually couldn’t see them anymore. With the adults and Atticus out of the room, the remaining three exchanged a nervous glance at each other.
“Uh-oh, I don’t know if we’ll be able to get Atticus up once he’s done. He’s always tired after taking it…” Tula hung her shoulders and looked at the other two next to her.
“Well, we can stay up and tell him all about it. And take lots of pictures for him, right?” Cellic suggested.
“Oooh, good idea, Cellic. My dad owns a camera, we can sneak in his room and get it!” Tula answered, motioning the two to follow.
The quiet room filled with music and chatter once she opened the door. She lead them down the hall to the furthest room in the back before trying to nudge it open. The sound snores could be heard, and Tula hushed the others so they wouldn’t disturb him. In a whispered tone, she spoke.
“Dad spent all day and yesterday cooking and making the fireworks. Uncle Alto said he’ll wake up later, so we can use the camera until then."
She shuffled through the camera bag under his bed and pulled out a worn polaroid camera. She handed it off to Kirby, and the trio headed out before the elder could wake up.
