-The Surge-
(Pyrell)
“The water’s not helping! This was the 10th glass, Falspar, and I still can’t-” Pyrell quickly stopped when several embers almost hit the Puff when he talked. He quickly cupped both hands to cover his mouth, and looked at Falspar in an apologetic manner.
“J-just take a deep breath and try to relax.” Falspar suggested as he tried to put out the small flames in the kitchen. Once distinguished, the Puff grabbed his arm and motioned him to the bathroom. “How about you take a cold shower, maybe that would help.”
Pyrell just shook his head and turnd away from him so he wouldn’t accidentally strike him with his fire. “Nothing’s going to help, Falspar. I…already told you what’s causing it.”
The warrior’s wings lowered, and he softly repeated the words Pyrell spoke when he was having trouble speaking this morning. “A-are you sure it’s the Surge that’s causing it? W-what if you’re just coming down with a cold or something? You can’t control your fire when you’re ill.”
“It’s not the same, and you know it too. I’ve been feeling my temperature rising throughout the hour ever since I woke up. I’m unable to control my fire for the simplest things, and I can’t even talk without setting something a blaze. Unless you want our entire house to be set on fire next, I have to head out to East Nova as soon as possible until it ends."
“W-well, how soon? By the end of the week?” He asked. Surely he’d have to plan, pack and prepare everything before leaving to another planet without anyone by his side for a whole week.
“I was thinking more like….the end of the day.” He replied, and flinched when Falspar shouted from his response.
“By the end of the day?!! That’s not enough time! What are you going to pack? W-what about food, or transportation? More importantly, what about-“
“Daddies!!!” Tula’s cheerful voice cut the tension from the two as the toddler ran towards the pair. Pyrell quickly nudged Falspar to halt their discussion for now. The last thing he wanted was their daughter to get worked up if she saw Falspar’s frantic behavior.
“There’s my little Plum.” Pyrell smiled, and gave a slight nod to the Guardian who entered moments later. “Did you have a fun time playing with Atticus?"
“Hm! He showed me all of his plants, and stones, and we even drew a bunch of pictures together!” She reached into her satchel and pulled out several colorful drawings. “Here! I drew them for you!”
Pyrell took them from her hand, and both parents happily cooed when they saw all the doodles of all four of them together. Pyrell picked one out from the bunch while he handed Falspar the rest to hold. It was a drawing of him and Tula together, and the Leo flipped it over and pointed to it.
“I think this one is my favorite. I’ll have to hang it in my room later today so I can-“
“L-Lord Pyrell!!!” Alto’s frantic voice interrupted as he used his tails to pull Tula away from the Leo. It didn’t take long for him and Falspar to notice he accidentally set the drawing on fire. Falspar quickly swatted the paper out of his hand and proceeded to stomp on it until it was out.
“Sweet Nova. Lord Pyrell, are you feeling alright?“ Alto uncurled his tails where he kept Tula safely hidden. The small Sasuke crawled out and walked towards the scorched remains.
Guilt flooded the Leo when he saw her picking up the only piece that didn’t turn to ash. He tried his best not to tear up, but having accidentally set something Tula made him was proving to be quite hard. “T-Tula I….”
“Daddy….” The Sasuke looked up in concern. “Are you okay? Do you have another cold or something?”
Pyrell couldn’t help but tense up from her caring nature of his wellbeing, and not the fact he destroyed her drawing. He covered his mouth once more and proceeded to speak . “Y-yeah. I’m…having a really hard time controlling my fire.”
“It happens during the hottest week of the year,” Falspar explained since he knew Pyrell didn’t want to speak. “He’ll have to travel back to his old home in East Nova until it passes.”
“I don’t suppose this has anything to do about the Surge, does it?” Alto asked.
“The...Surge?” Tula questioned.
“It’s a very rare condition the Leo species have.” Alto explained. “Their temperature will rise to an extremely hight degree to the point they have no control of their fire. As you just whitnessed, even something as simple as talking is proven to be quite difficult for him.
