-The Family of Sasuke #225-
(Bate / Ramset)
It was a topic that never really fazed Ramset. He never brought it up, nor has he really gave it much thought. Seeing as he tends to live in the present, and not in the past, he’d merely shrug it off if someone were to bring it up. It was something he truly never pondered until the night he woke from a nightmare. A nightmare about…..them.
“Bate,” Ramset called out to his friend to make sure he was paying attention. He was, of course, and the Sasuke timidly held out his cup to dodge the question he wanted to ask him.
Bate stared at the cup in hand and gave a sigh. “I know you didn’t wake me up in the middle of the night just to drink all the hot chocolate I bought.”
“Not quite, but…” He held it up since he was still craving for the sweet treat,
The elder snatched it out of his hand and went over to the stove to pour him another cup. He sat back down and observed Ramset tediously fiddling with the mixing spoon he provided before downing the drink. Once finished, he slightly pushed it away and looked up at Bate. He saw him patently waiting, and Ramset knew he had to start talking. He instinctively reached up and grabbed his hat and focused his attention to the old warrior.
“I….have a question to ask you.”
Bate only hummed in response,
“It….” Ramset lowered his voice to an unusually low level, “May be a touchy subject….”
This caught Bate’s attention. Usually Ramset comes over to talk to him over stupid, trivial things like borrowing money or going to get Nova Crunch for him, or even just stopping by just to boast about his students. Having him come over to talk about something that causes even Ramset to become caution was….unusual.
Bate rested his arms on the table and looked at the Sasuke before him. He could sense how troubled he was, and that alone was causing Bate to become weary.
“What is it regarding?” He asked,
Ramset hesitated for a moment. The adverted his eyes elsewhere in the home and waiting a bit since he was afraid his friend would be offended by it.
“I wanted to ask you about, ummmm…..” He started to panic and darted to the empty cup, “C-could I have another drink?”
“Ramset….” Bate lowered the cup away from the face and locked eyes with him. He saw how scared and unsure he was, so he slightly lifted his mask so Ramset could get a better look
of him. “Just tell me, I’m not going to get mad,”
Ramset slightly calmed down upon hearing that, thought he was still frightful of the outcome. He took a shaky breath and softly mumbled the last part of his question, hoping to Nova Bate wouldn’t snap at him.
“Family….”
“Hm?” Bate questioned, not really understanding what he meant by that “What about family.”
“W-what I mean….” Ramset closed his eyes when he spoke the last part, Who….were your parents, Bate?”
The room was silent, and Ramset eventually opened one of his eyes to see Bate’s reaction. To his surprise, he didn’t really seemed angered by it. It looked like he was questioning and giving it a lot of thought. Bate cleared his throat and gave his attention back to Ramset,
“While I don’t know anything about my biological parent.....I could tell you about my adoptive mother. She was a bird who resided on the outskirts of East Nova. She took me in when she found me in South Nova, and raised me as her own.”
Bate watched as Ramset dwelled on his answer before speaking again,
“Ummm…sorry for intruding more into the topic, but, may I asked what happened to her?”
“…..….”
Bate slightly lowered his wings from the faint and final memory of her, “She’s not here anymore. I was gravely injured the final moment I saw her. Because my injuries were so severe, I was sent here to Kalmari Town to recover. I…haven’t seen her since.”
Ramset could hear the pain in his voice and quickly apologized. Bate waved it off and decided to focus on the real issue here.
“Was there anything else you wanted to ask me?” Bate inquired,
Ramset shook his head, but Bate knew he was hiding the real reason for his visit.
“Hm, then could I ask why you wanted to know about my family during unreasonable hours in the night?”
“Bate, you sleep 90 percent during the day, you and I both know you’re up at night.”
“And….you and I both know there’s something else on your mind.” He replied back,
Ramset flinched and bate tiredly rubbed his temples from his stubbornness. “I may sleep during the day, but I’m also tired at night. Stop lingering and just ask your question.”
“You…wouldn’t be able to answer it.” Ramset softly replied, “Unless you happen to know who my parents are….”
Bate’s eyes widened in surprise. He didn’t expect Ramset to say that. As long as he’s been around the loud mouthed Sasuke, this was the first time he ever brought up his parents. Now thinking about it, he didn’t even question the thought of Ramset’s origin. Needless to say, it left him speechless.
