Our Captain
Pyrell / Garlude / Jecra
Ready?

Ready!!

“Okay, on the count of three. One, two-“

“Wait!!! What if he says no???”

“Don’t worry, I have a solution to that. Just…agree with everything I say, okay?”

“Okay.”

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three!”

Several knocks echo through the empty hall. The pair eagerly wait, both pressing their ears against the door to try to hear the other side.

“I think I hear something!” One of them says, as the sounds of slow footsteps were heard.

The pair backup and wait in anticipation as the handle begins to move, and the door slightly creeks open. Tired eyes stare at the pair for a moment, and without a word, he begins to close it.

“H-hey, not so fast, captain!”

Jecra, the more boisterous of the pair, speaks as he lodges his foot between the door and the frame to prevent his captain from closing it.

“C’mon, you’re not even going to at least greet your two amazing comrades? It’s almost been an entire month, we missed ya! Isn’t that right, Garlude?”

Garlude, Pyrell’s second in command, takes a moment to find her words since Jecra totally went off script in their plan.

“What Jecra is trying to say is…we wanted to make sure you and Drani are doing okay.” She speaks calmly, and gives a smile to the other. “It’s good to see you again, I hope we’re not interrupting anything.”

Their captain, Lord Pyrell, is a man of very little words- always wearing a stoic expression, and rarely..or better yet, never spends time with them aside from missions. If it weren’t for his Guardian being the bridge of communication between them, Garlule is certain he’d never grace the pair with his presence.

“Oh, that’s so kind of you and Jecra to visit.” Another voice speaks up as she joins the conversation.

A salmon colored bird perches herself on her masters pauldron, and smiles at the pair. Garlude notices she’s not as springy, and is quite worn like her other half. It only happens when she and their captain take their leave every year. They disappear for a several weeks, and return very tired and exhausted. It usually takes them another few weeks for things to finally get back to normal, but she and Jecra always wonder where their captain goes, and why he never tells them anything about it….

“We were wondering if you’d like to join us this afternoon. Updated portraits are being taken, and-“

“No.” It’s the first time she’s heard his voice in weeks. Pyrell’s voice comes out soft and low, but still contains his usual gruff and roughness that’ll put anyone on edge to those who cross him.

“It would only take a few minutes of your day.” His rejection doesn’t stop her from trying. “We appreciate all that you and Drani do as our captains, and having a photo of our team would mean so much to us.”

“Yeah! I’ll even treat you and Drani to lunch. We can all catch up, and-“

“No.” Pyrell signs- a little more tired, and a bit more irritated than before. He grips the handle of his door and begins to budge Jecra’s foot away.

“H-hey, wait!!” He stammers.”G-Garlude, a little help, please???”

Garlude quickly puts herself between him and Pyrell, and tries to settle the tension. She knows this is their only chance- once he shuts the door, she knows he won’t open it again.

“We obviously don’t need to do lunch, given you and Drani’s, ah…busy schedule. The portrait is all we ask for. Please, captain, I’d really like to send my family a photo of our squad. They worry, and I want them to know I’m in good hands with you, Drani and Jecra by my side.” She then glances up at Drani for support. “You’re like my other family, and I want something to remember our time in the GSA before my service ends.”

Drani notices, and softly speaks to her other half. “Having a photo does sound nice, my master.”

Pyrell’s gaze silently shifts to Drani.

“Maybe we can even take one with just the two of us afterwards. I’d really love that.” She lets out a happy chirp.

Jercra and Garlude watch as Pyrell gives just the slightest nod from the idea, and closes the door to get ready. The pair let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding, before silently celebrating their small victory.

“Nice one, Garlude.” He gives her a thumbs up. “He never says no to Drani, good thinking.”

“You almost ruined it with that lunch suggestion.” She huffs as she motions him to the auditorium where the portraits are being held. “Next time, let me do the talking.”

“I was just trying to break the tension. All the other captains would’ve jumped at the chance.”

“Well, if you haven’t noticed, our captain isn’t exactly like the others, alright?” She says. “Be lucky we were able to get him out of his room for once.”

“He’ll warm up to us eventually, no pun intended.” He nudged her shoulder and runs ahead. “C’Mon, let’s get ready for our photos, I want my little Joey to see how cool and powerful his father looks when we take it!”

Garlude gives a playful huff in amusement as she catches up to join him as he’s not the only one who wants to impress their family.

I believe I mentioned before that Pyrell was the captain of Jecra and Garlude before Meta and co arrived at the GSA. I changed their designs a bit to suit my style, and their mannerisms compared to the anime. Actually, I don't remember much about them, all I remember is they were the comrades of Meta Knight, and then they all died. ToT But Gumball Warrior isn't the anime, so they may act and behave differently than their anime counterpart.

Anyways, I'll explain so small stuff about them any Pyrell below. It's mostly Garlude, since Pyrell is very important to her!
**You must know about certain terms or lore in GW to understand this.

Pyrell is the captain, and oversees Jecra and Garlude in the GSA. Pyrell is not like any of the other captains, claims Garlude. He's very quiet, keeps to himself and doesn't want to interact with her and Jecra unless it has to do something about missions. The only one who keeps a bridge of communication between them is Drani as she does her best to be Pyrell's voice.

Jecra is a bit bothered by it. None of the other captains are like Pyrell, but Garlude is very patient with him. She knows he's dealing with  / something / even if she doesn't know exactly what it is. The way he's behaving is not due to malice or hatred towards them, so she harbors no ill will towards him.

**I actually doodled this mini page below while I was finishing up this illustration. It's when Garlude talks to Meta and Falspar about their captain. Like, you need to understand that Meta and co have NEVER seen another Star Warrior aside from Bate. They were so happy to meet another! But at the same time, Meta and Co don't realize how absolutely LUCKY they are to have lived in Kalmari Town where being a Star Warrior is praised and honored.  It's like a badge of pride to them, because they were loved by everyone in their community.

Pyrell is an example when the complete opposite happens. If you read that one very  particular story about Pyrell's childhood, and what his father put him through, then you'd know exactly why he resents the title of Star Warrior so much. I obviously won't go into detail here because the illustration and story is on his page, and it contain mature and distressing themes to it.

But anyways, Garlude has to tell Meta and Co that even though Pyrell is brash and comes off extremely cold, he DOES care for his comrades.

**Sorry, I just love how confident I am when it comes to Meta and Falspar after a decade of drawing them. I just need to draw a basic circle and I
can literally outline the entire panel without issue. But because Garlude is so new, I have to really flesh out the sketch for her. XDDDD

I like to think before Falspar came into his life, Garlude was the one who was trying to be the friend and comrade Pyrell needed. And Drani was willing to help whenever she could. She knows something happened to Pyrell, but Pyrell is very distant and basically impossible to interact with outside of battles. She wanted to be the one who can help him get through his demons, and be someone Pyrell knows he can rely on. She claims Pyrell has saved her and Jecra multiple times on the battlefield, and she owes her life to her captain for everything he's done.

After Pyrell lost his captain position because of Falspar, he couldn't be with Garlude and Jecra anymore. It really upset both her and Jecra when Meta became their leader and captain, and Pyrell was placed in a rookie squad with Falspar. Garlude couldn't see Pyrell anymore unless it was lunch/dinner, but Pyrell eats alone, so she really couldn't see him like she once did.

Over time, she did notice a change in her captain-

Before Meta and co arrived, Garlude knew Pyrell hated anyone talking/ being around him, even nudging or lightly touching him. But one day she saw Falspar (the literal embodiment of happy, boisterous, outgoing, fluff) hanging around Pyrell, and him being absolutely okay with it! This shocks her, absolutely stuns her- because of all the time she was with Pyrell (She was his second in command), he would NEVER tolerate such a thing. And here's Falspar- nudging, poking, badgering and cozying up to Pyrell like they've been comrades for decades.

Garlude is thrilled for her former captain. Someone was actually able to break his wall down, and get him to finally open up. But a verrrry small part of her is envious of Falspar. (I use envy EXTREMELY loosely here. Not in a vile or mean way) she just...doesn't know HOW Falspar was able to do it. And she wants to know what he did that caused such a shift in her captains behavior. Garlude admires and greatly respects Pyrell, so she wanted to have what Falspar has;  to gain Pyrell's trust and get him to talk and open up to her.

But she knows she'll never get that chance because when Pyrell WAS given the opportunity to be their captain again, he declined and stayed with Falspar- aka a lower rank and position than he once was. Pyrell gave up his ranks just to be with Falspar, and this comes as a surprise to everyone. Eventually, she respects his decision of not returning as their leader, and understands Falspar is very special to Pyrell in a way she's not.

As time and missions go on, she, Jecra and Meta form a powerful team, and she's happy in her position as Meta's new second in command. She's happy where she's at, and she's especially glad her former captain is doing much better as well.

----

OKAY THAT'S ALL!!! Thanks for reading! >3<

Oh, also, for those who didn't catch it and wondered where Pyrell goes, or why he and Drani were so exhausted- it was because of the Surge. No one knows about his condition, until Alto literally yells it out one day when he put all the pieces together. And like, Alto is genius, so he'd know all about rare, ancient Burning Leo conditions and such.  Garlude and Jecra...were not happy when they found out. Pyrell kept that secret from them, and their captain had to suffer all alone with no one to lean on.
