"A child?!!" Bate's voiced echoed throughout the small house.
"Yes, Bate, you've been saying the same thing for the past fifteen minutes." Gordon rolled his eyes and covered his face with one of his hands. "Could you stop repeating it already?"
His words had little effect on the Puffball, however.
"But...but I don't know anything about kids! What am I going to do?!!" Bate got up from his chair and started pacing around the living room.
"I'm not the fatherly type, isn't that something you're, I dunno, born with?" He quickly spun around and faced the Gordo. "Does Ellie actually think I'm fatherly?!! I don't even know what that stupid word means for Nova's sake!"
Gordon heard enough and went over to calm his frantic friend. "Bate, chill out." He patted him on the back. "I'm sure you'd make a great dad."
"D-dad?!!" That word alone was enough to send a shiver up his spine. "Don't say that!!" He pushed Gordon away and started pacing again.
"I..I-"
His words were suddenly muffled by a pair of hands.
"Okay, you need to quit freaking out and calm down." Gordon said as he lead the puffball over to the couch and sat him down. "Now, from start to finish, tell me what happened."
Bate took a deep breath and began telling the events that took place a few hours earlier.
"It all started this afternoon..."
-----------------------
-TWACK-
"Oouch!!"
Bate placed his hand over where he was just hit. He looked down and observed the crumbling remains below him.
"A...snowball?"
The Puffball was currently on an afternoon stroll through the only forest in Kalmari. Today was the first snowfall of the month, and Bate wanted to make sure he enjoyed the untouched landscape while he can. Everything was going well until someone decided to throw snowballs at him. Of course, he already knew who was responsible for it.
"Where is she?" He muttered to himself.
-SMACK-
Bate spun around. "ELLIE!!" He shouted. "I know it's you, quit hitting me and come out!"
A few seconds passed before one of the bushes started to rustle. A peach colored Squishy appeared from behind.
"Awww, Bate," She pouted, "You're no fun." She stared to walk towards him.
"What's up? You seem so uptight today."
He let out a tired sigh. "It's nothing." He hugged her with one of his wings. "Just…thinking."
She lightly giggled. "Oh, you can spend time thinking later." She grabbed his hand and pulled him to a clear opening in the forest. "C'mon! Let's play in the snow!"
His posture faltered a bit. "You know I wouldn't feel right about pelting my wife with clumps of ice."
"Then pretend it’s like the first time you met me." She bent down to form another ball of snow. "I know for a fact you wouldn't hesitate back then."
"That's completely different." He picked up some snow and started to form it. "You were so… annoying.”
"Psh, takes one to know one.”
“Oh, really?”
"Really."
Both stood opposite of each other, snowballs in hand.
"3"
"2"
Bate quickly threw his.
-TWACK-
"Hey!" She wiped the snow from her face. "You can't do that!"
Bate narrowed his eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry." He started smirking under his mask. "I thought you were the one who told me to act like I’m 2,300 again."
Ellie backed up and threw a few snowballs at him. Bate, being an expert in flight, flew in the sky to dodge them. Ellie tried to hit him, but she wasn't strong enough to throw them at such a height.
"Is someone forgetting that this Puffball has wings?"
He landed back on the blanket of snow. "Never mess with the awesomeness of my flying abilities!" He spread out his wings and started laughing. "It seems like my poor, little Ellie had to find that out the hard way."
She rolled her eyes and threw one at the tree right above him. The branches started shaking and a huge pile of snow landed on top of him.
"Awesomeness?" She snickered. “Suuuure."
Bate struggled a bit trying to free himself. "Fine, fine..." He stood up and brushed the show off of him. "You win this time."
She smiled and tackled him back to the ground. "Hahahaha!!! Just like the year before that, and the year before that and the year before that?"
She stood back up and started gathering a bunch of snow. Bate curiously looked at her. "What are you doing?"
She turned around and gave the Puffball a wink. "Just be patient, you'll see."
He stood there and continued to watch what she was doing. Eventually, the pile of snow started to form and take the shape of a Puffball and a Squishy. Bate finally realized what she was doing and walked over to help her. When it was finished, both stood back and admired their work.
"Ah…” He tapped his mask. “What an odd couple."
Ellie nodded "I agree." She walked over and hugged him.
'Hmmm...It still seems like something's missing.' she thought. She pondered about it until it finally hit her.
"Oh, wait!" Ellie ran over and formed something else.
Bate looked to see what she was making. What he saw completely took him by surprise.
"There.” She said. “Now we’re an odd....family."
Bate slowly walked to the little snow Puffball she made and placed his hand over its head. Ellie walked behind him.
"It looks just like his father.”
"I-it does...."
========================================
"And that's basically what happened."
Bate grabbed Gordon by his wings and started shaking him. "What should I do?! What should I do?!!!"
"s..stp shking m...e!!!"
"Huh?" Bate let go of his friend and softly mumbled an apology. He covered his face and let out a frustrated groan.
"It's just, I don't know what Ellie was thinking. What should I do, Gordon?"
Gordon waited a few seconds for the dizziness to wear off before he could respond. "So, you really wanna know what I think?"
He went over and lifted Bates mask. A mixture of fearfulness and confusion was shown through the puffballs eyes. Gordon looked and him and smiled.
"I'm not going to change what I said before, I think you'll make an excellent father."
