-Mending a Broken Mentor-
(Ramset)
"And where do you think you two are going?"
The two Puffballs tensed up when they heard a certain voice calling them from behind. It's a voice they know all too well; a voice they always try to avoid. The pair gave each other a nervous glance before slowly turning around. They looked up and eyed the elder Puffball in front of them; arms crossed and eagerly tapping his foot for a reply. When none of them spoke, he started to get frustrated.
"Dragato, Falspar, don't make me repeat myself. Answer me, now!" He snapped.
The pair yelped from his voice and started to back away. "We were, just..ummm..." Falspar started to speak, but mumbled the last half so Bate couldn't hear it.
"Speak up," The elder demanded. "I'm not going to leave until you answer my question."
Falspar looked at Dragato for support. The maroon Puffball stepped forward to speak for the both of them. They knew they were going to be in trouble, so there was no point in prolonging it.
"We were just going to train with Teacher Ramset...."
"I see...." Bate nodded and walked towards the pair. He reached out and grabbed the bombs both of them were carrying. "But didn't I specifically tell you that you're too young to handle bombs?"
Dragato and Falspar were too petrified to speak, but the pair knows there were in the wrong. They knew they weren't allowed to handle bombs until they were at the age of 1,300.
Ramset told them not to listen to Bate, however. So when the time came for them to train, all three had to be very quick and stealthy. They would meet in the canyons, far away from where Bate trains. They've only been caught a few times before, but this time, Bate seems to be at his limit.
Bate gripped the bombs in his hands and lashed out at the pair. "WHERE'S RAMSET?!! YOU THREE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE!!"
"Quit shouting, you idiot!" Ramset appeared from behind the elder and kicked him in the back. Bate lost his balance and fell over.
"Don't you ever yell at my students again!" The Sasuke stepped in front of the two Puffballs to block them from Bate. "If you have a problem then yell at me, not them!"
Bate stood up and grabbed Ramset with his wing. He glared at him, eyes glowing bright orange. "That's because you never listen! I told you that they're forbidden to use explosives until they're older!"
"Oh, not this again." He rolled his eyes. "I'm their mentor, I think I know what I'm doing."
"I don't care if you're their mentor! If you're doing something stupid, I'm going to interfere!" He shouted and held up one of the bombs. "These aren't toys! They could get hurt if one of them mishandles it."
"They're not going to get hurt! I always supervise them anytime we train with explosives." Ramset pushed himself out of Bates grasp and snatched the explosives from his hands. "Just because you had a bad experience with them doesn't mean you need to be a buzz-kill to those who enjoy working with it!"
Bate turned away and tried to block out his annoying bickers. He was tired of constantly fighting Ramset about this subject. In fact, it seems like all they ever do is fight when it came to the well-being of their students. The elder took a deep breath and faced Ramset again. His eyes reverted back to his normal pale teal color, and he softly mumbled an apology.
"Ramset, I'm sorry for shouting, but could you please realize that I'm only doing it to protect them?" He looked at the two Puffballs hiding behind Ramset. "If you care about them, then you'd wait until they've matured more."
Ramset didn't bother listening. He knew what he was doing, and he didn't like anyone telling him how to teach his students. He nudged Dragato and Falspar to follow him to his training grounds. "I gotta go, Bate. We've already lost enough time as it is."
Bate covered his face and let out a defeated sigh. "Being a mentor is more than about teaching them how to fight. They need someone they can trust and look up to. It's your job to protect them!"
"Why don't you focus on your students and I focus on mine, alright?" Ramset shouted from behind. "Mind your own business and let me do my job."
------
"Teacher, are you okay?"
Meta waved his hands in front of Bate's mask. When he didn't respond, he tapped on it a few times.
"Helloooooo!!" Meta shouted, "Did you fall asleep or something?"
"Gumball," Bate grabbed his hand to stop his annoying knocks. "Quit doing that, it's giving me a headache."
"Sorry, but you weren't listening to me, and ummm...." He pointed to his other hand. "Your ice cream melted all over your glove"
Bate looked at his hand. "Oh, of the love of Nova..." He dropped the cone and took off his glove. He shook off excess vanilla dripping from it before setting it on the grass to dry.
Meta started laughing and leaned on the elders wings. "Do you want to get another? The store's still open."
Bate smirked and patted the warrior's head. "So you could get another as well? I don't think so, Gumball."
"Aw, you're no fun." Meta fell over and started rolling on the grass. "I bet Teacher Ramset would buy Falspar another if he asked."
Bate frowned when he brought up Ramset. He was still weary about his run-in with him today. The elder didn't think he'd get so angry and defensive when it came to his teachings. If Bate had a problem with Gordon's lectures, he knew the Gordo would listen and try to understand Bate's point of view; not Ramset, though. It's the one thing Bate hated, and their friendship has been on the rocks ever since he introduced explosives into the curriculum. He's just about given up on the stubborn Sasuke.
"Teacherrrrrr!!!"
Bate shook his thoughts and focused on the tiny Puffball whining for his attention. He slightly smiled at his needy, childish behavior. Though Meta was the baby of the group, he knew the tiny Puffball was very protective over his mentor. He worries about Bate just as much as Bate worries about him, which he finds quite unusual that Meta would do such a thing being as young as he is. It didn't matter, though, because Bate knew Meta would do anything to protect the ones he cares about. It was a belief that Bate's been living by for as long as he can remember, and he was glad Meta is following in his footsteps under that category. He wondered if Meta was in his position, would he do the same?
Bate, again, shook off his thoughts and decided to drop the subject for today. Meta was constantly bugging him and being riled up will just get him more worried. He doesn't know what he'll do when they meet up again, but for now, stressing about it isn't going to solve anything.
"Hey, Gumball?"
"Huh?" Meta stopped whining and looked at him. "Yes, Teacher?"
The elder stood up and held out his hand. "Y'know, I think I'll take you up on your offer for another ice cream."
"Really?!!" Meta jumped up and grabbed his hand. "Can I get one too?!!"
"Sure." The elder replied.
"With sprinkles?!!" He asked.
"Only if you want."
"And can we go star gazing after?!!"
"Don't push your luck, Gumball."
Meta pouted and stuck out his tongue. "You're no fun."
