-Living with Teacher-
(Bate / Meta)
All three warriors shared a worrisome glance as they continued to follow the elder to their new home. It was going to be strange not being with their caretaker anymore, but seeing as they practically spend their whole day training with their teachers, maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as they thought it would. Then again…it was Bate’s home, and if anyone knew Bate, they’d know he’s not the most lenient of teachers.
“How strict do you think he’ll be?” Arthur whispered to the others so Bate wouldn’t hear.
“Not too strict, I hope,” Nonsurat replied, “Do you think he’ll be able to cook our favorite food?”
“Or what about our favorite stories when we go to sleep?” Meta cut in, “What if we have a nightmare? Do we wake him up?”
The three continued to ask questions unaware that Bate was listening the whole time. The elder pondered their questions and wondered the same as well. As a teacher, he’d say he’s confident in his abilities to look after them, but as a full-time caretaker….? Maybe he should've gave it a bit more thought before accepting their former taker's final request.
As his house finally came into view, Bate halted, and looked at the three who quickly stopped their chatter.
“This will be your new home,” Bate motioned one of his wings and pointed to the cozy little cottage near Kalmari Forest. Even though they’ve probably seen it a handful of times, he figured he’d be formal about it since it’s now their home as well.
The warriors dropped their luggage and stepped a bit closer to see. Meta spotted a small swing tied to one of the trees and smiled as he never seen it there until now, “Hey, look! We get our very own swing!”
Arthur and Nonsurat were just as excited and wanted to go play on it, but Bate stopped them before they had the chance to run off.
“Why don’t I show you where you’ll be sleeping first, then you three could go off and play.”
Although they eagerly wanted to play, the three gave a nod and ran back to their luggage before following Bate to the front door. The elder pulled out a set of keys from under his pauldrons and unlocked it. Before he let them in, Bate faced the warriors and decided to get a few things out in the open,
“Before I let you in, let me set a few rules. First off, I expect all three of you to be on your upmost behavior and not make a mess of things, got it?”
“Y-yes, Teacher Bate,”
“I try to keep my home as clean and tidy as possible, so please- always clean up after yourselves.”
The three gave a nod, and Bate continued,
“Most importantly, my room is strictly off limits, as for Gordon.” He put much emphasis on it, “If I catch you snooping when I’m not around, there /will/ be serious consequences.”
When the three agreed, Bate turned back around and opened the door to let them in. “Alright, then- welcome to your new home.”
Meta was the first to run in followed by the others. They took in their surroundings and explored the main part of the house. Arthur and Nonsurat went into the living room while Meta dashed into the kitchen. Bate just took a seat and waited until they were fully content to move on to the next part of the house.
Nonsurat curiously tilted his head and grabbed a photo on the coffee table. “Teacher Bate, is this you?"
The other two quickly perked up upon hearing that and ran to Nonsurat. They looked at the photo of Bate and Gordon who were much younger, smiling and laughing together before the shot was taken.
“Wow! You and Teacher Gordon must’ve been friends for a long time!” Meta beamed, “You look so old compared to this photo!”
Bate flinched when he brought up his youth and snatched the photo back to place it in it’s rightful spot, “Yeah, ah….why don’t I show you to your room now,” He changed subjects and stood back up to head to the hall way.
“Well, ummm….” Bate mumbled as he stood at the doorway, “I…didn’t expect you three to move in so quickly so….Gordon and I didn’t have a chance to finish your room yet….”
Bate opened the door and the three peeked inside. And like Bate said, it was incomplete. There were no beds, nor tables or lamps…or anything! It was completely empty. Meta walked in and frowned a bit.
“Are….we gonna have to sleep on the floor?”
Bate just let out a small chuckle and patted his head, “Only if you want to, but no. You’ll have to sleep in the living room for tonight. We’ll have everything done by tomorrow.”
“O-oh, alright…” Meta said and followed him out. Across from their room was another door, but Bate passed it and headed further down,
“Teacher, what about this one?” Meta pointed to it,
Bate just continued walking, “That’s my room, Gumball. It’s not important right now, so just keep following me."
The elder lead them to another room, and he slid the door so they could enter.
“And over here is where the bathroom is located,”
Bate flicked on the lights to the room and the three entered. It….didn’t look quite like a bathroom, however. The only thing that was in there were two small benches, and a large shelf full of towels. It was certainly not like what they had back in their hold home, and Arthur could only scratch his head in confusion,
“Umm….where’s the bath at?” He asked,
Bate pointed to another sliding door connected to the room, “This is just where you just dry off,” He explained and slid the other door that revealed the where the shower was located.
“This….doesn’t look like a bath,” Meta said as he walking into the rather spacious room. It was nothing but a bunch of tiles and a few nobs connected to one of the walls.”
“I don’t have a bath in my home, Gumball. You three will be using a shower instead."
“A….shower?” Nonsurat said with much hesitation, clearly not liking the idea, “We don’t have those at caretakers house.”
“How can you get clean without a bathtub?” Meta added, followed by everyone now asking questions,
“Where do you even put the bubble soap at?”
“Does the room fill up with water?"
“Wait, do we have to stand?”
“Why can’t we go out a get a bathtub?"
“Teacherrrrr!!!"
Bate just let out a sigh from all their petty whines, “Listen, You three. I’m not going to go out and install a bathtub, so you better get used to the idea taking showers from now on, okay? It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be, so quit whining about it."
The tiny warriors eventually calmed down and left the strange looking ‘bathroom’…..if you could even call it one due to the obvious lack of bath. The four made it to the last, and final room in the back. Bate shyly knocked a few times before entering. The lights were already on when the three walked in, and Nonsurat was the first out of the bunch to speak.
“Teacher Gordon!!” The little puff smiled as he ran to his mentor. Gordon faced his chipper little apprentice and patted his head,
“Did Bate finish giving you the grand tour?”
“Hm! He showed us everything!” He nodded, and glanced around his room. He eyed the large wall where all his weapons were displayed and let out a small squeak when he spotted
his favorite. "I see Duet!"
Gordon could only laugh from his excitement. He then looked at the other two asked the same question, “Did you two like it as well?”
“It’s…very nice,” Arthur said, trying to follow Bate’s rule of behavior. Meta on the other hand….
“Could we get a bathtub, Teacher Gordon?!”
“Uh…” Gordon just blinked a few times in confusion and looked at Bate who just shook his head from his foolish question.
“I’m not even going to go into it." The elder said and started to walk out, “Take care of the rest, Gordon, I’m going to lie down for a bit,”
When the door was closed, Gordon lowered himself to speak the the three, “So besides showing you around the house, did Bate tell you anything else?”
“Just a few rules…” Nonsurat answered,
“Yeah. Like behaving and cleaning up….” Arthur added
“Oh, and not to go in your rooms…though we’re kinda in your room right now,” Meta said,
Gordon slightly chuckled from his literalness, “I think he means not going in when we’re not around. My room can be quite dangerous if you’re not careful. Something could fall if you three decide to play around.” He flicked one of the weapons with his hands,
“B-but what about if we have a nightmare….” Nonsurat asked, “Can’t we go in your room to get you?”
“Of course,” His eyes softened, “Feel free to come in if anything’s troubling you. Just be sure I’m actually in the room, and mind your surroundings so you don’t get hurt."
“And…Teacher too?” Meta said, hopeful.
“Yes, Bate too.” He said, knowing Meta was more suited to seek Bate for comfort. “Though, Meta,” Gordon warned, “Please try to only wake him up if it’s absoutly necessary,"
“Huh?” Meta questioned, “W-why?”
“He likes to follow a certain routine, and since you three will be living with us, I think he’d be appreciative if you’d respect that.” Gordon explained, “Around this time, Bate is usually sleeping, and I’m in my room tending to my weapons. During this hour, I expect you to mind your volume and not roughhouse unitl he wakes up.”
“W-whaaaat? So I can’t ask him to play with us now?!” He looked over at the door, “H-he was just up a few minutes ago,"
“But now he’s asleep. This isn’t like outside where you can just jump on his back and expect him to play with you. This is his home, and being woke in the comfort of his own bed isn’t
something he’d appreciate. If you need something, ask me first before going to Bate, alright?"
“Yes, Teacher Gordon,” Meta softly whispered, and lowered his wings in disappointment.
—--
“Meta,” Nonsurat whispered as he peeked over the couch when he saw his comrade heading to the hallway. “Where are you going?”
After their talk with Gordon, the trio decided to settle down and keep themselves occupied in the living room. All tried to keep quiet as none wanted to wake their new caretaker, but….
“If you’re thinking about waking up Teacher Bate, don’t. We’re gonna get in trouble.” Arthur said, putting his crayon down and ran towards him.
“I wasn’t going to wake him up…” He huffed and walked towards the closed door. “I…was just going to see if he was really sleeping.”
“Why wouldn’t he be?” Arthur whispered, but soon panicked when Meta twisted the brass knob. “M-Meta don’t!”
It was too late, however. Both Puffballs held their breath as the door loudly creaked opened. They stood there for a moment before giving a sigh of relief. Still persistent as ever, Meta silently crept in. Arthur wanted to shout, but for the sake of both of them not getting in trouble just ran back to the living room with Nonsurat. There was no was he was taking the blame for Meta’s stupid actions.

The room was dimly lit, but the little warrior could still make out his room. He stepped in a bit further and froze when he heard Bate’s loud snoring. He focused his attention on the old warrior and noticed that, in fact, he was sleeping. The elder was spread across his bed, wings lazily hanging off as they gently rested on the floor. Meta wanted nothing more than to wake him up, but greatly resisted. Instead he took the time to explore the room. TECHNICALLY, Bate is occupying it, so he’s really not breaking any rules.
“How strict do you think he’ll be?” Arthur whispered to the others so Bate wouldn’t hear.
“Not too strict, I hope,” Nonsurat replied, “Do you think he’ll be able to cook our favorite food?”
