-Just a Thought
(Bate / Meta / Mends)
"Oh, this is a surprise." Mends spoke as tore his focus away from this paper work to greet the figure in front of him. Usually it would be a huge hassle to even get him to come to the clinic for his appointment, but to his shock, here he was! The old doctor couldn't help but raise a brow, however, when he glanced at the clock. "It's a quarter past 7, Bate, and I don't have you scheduled until noon."
The fluttering sound of the doctor's wing echoed in the empty hallway as he pulled out a stethoscope to place it on his patient's chest. "Are you feeling alright? Do you need me to see you now?"
"I...I'm fine, really." Bate stepped back and shook his head. "T...thank you for the concern, though..."
"There's little room for error when it comes to your heath, boy. Can't be too sure, not under my watch." He spoke and set aside the device. "So if you haven't come here for your appointment, may I ask what brings you here at this hour?"
Mends watched as the Puffball shyly looked away.
"I, ah....well......" The Puff started to stammer until another, rather loud voice called out to the warrior.
"Oh, it's so good to see you again, Sir Bate!" A small, tan colored Squishy greeted him. "Are you here to visit little Meta again? It's so nice of you to donate your time, you can't believe how happy he gets when he sees you."
Mends didn't speak a word, and watched a Bate quickly spoke to the nurse in a flustered tone before focusing back to Mends once their conversation finally ended. The old doctor couldn't help but smile at the embarrassed Puffball, and motioned him to his office so they could privately talk.

"So, I guess I know why you wanted to visit." Mends spoke, as he closed the door and took his seat.
"Ah, y-yeah...I, ummm...y'know...." Again, Bate started to stutter when asked about it.
"Please, Bate." Mends hushed. "You don't need to worry, I understand. You're just concerned for the boy, yes? His health is improving. He should be released by next week if all goes well."
"O-oh, t-thanks for informing me." Bate gave a slight nod.
"Yes, yes. To my understanding, he'll be placed where the other four are currently staying. That is, unless....." Mends paused and looked up at the Warrior.
"Hm?" Bate tilted his head in bewilderment from his statement. "Unless what?"
Mends could only shake his head from his cluelessness. "Unless.....you're interested in adopting him."
"A-adopting....?" Bate slightly went numb from the mere mention of the word.
Him.....adopting Meta?
Being a father....?
Having a family?
The warrior quickly shook his head. "W-wait....Y-you have it all wrong, I....I don't-"
"Bate, it's clear from the conversation you had earlier that you have an attachment to the infant. He seems to have also taking a liking towards you as well."
"H-he's a baby. He'll laugh and smile to anyone who visits." He continued to deny the doctors words.
"Bate, there's no need to get so embarrassed about it. I'm sure you'd make a wonderful father to the boy, and-"
"T-that's enough!" Bate barked and pushed himself away Mends' desk. With his frustration raising, the warrior headed to the exit and decided maybe it was best to head home instead of visiting the young warrior. He gripped the handle of the door, and gave a small, apologetic sigh. "I...I'm sorry, but....I just don't think I'm the right one for the job....."
"I....understand. It was just a thought, but if you do decide to change your mind...." The doctor opened one of the drawers to his desk, and handed the warrior a manila envelope containing several forms. "Please, don't hesitate to talk to me...."
Bate took the forms without a word and walked out. He took several steps but suddenly stopped. "Oh....c-could you do me a favor?" He spoke.
"Hm?" Mends turned around and faced him.
"Please...." His voice, laced with sadness, "Don't tell anyone we had this conversation...."
