Journey to South Nova
Chapter. 1 : Promise Me
When news got out that Bate was traveling to South Nova to stay with a certain Sphere Doomer for a few days, 5 particular Puffballs wasted no time begging and pleading to go with him. They knew how stubborn and hardheaded their teacher was when it came to them tagging along, so all five planned to say, or do anything to make sure Bate said yes.
“No,” Bate simply said as he started to pack his bag.
“But whyyyy!” All five whined from being rejected. Apparently their words had little to no effect.
Bate faced the five, and in a serious tone explained why he couldn’t take them.
“Flying in Kalmari, and flying in South Nova are two completely different things. The conditions are harsher, the weather is colder and if one of you get separated, you could die. I’m not going to take that risk.”
“But Teacher, we promise we’ll listen to everything you say,” Meta eagerly said to hopefully persuade him since he wanted to see Atka as well. “We’ll all stick together and won’t do anything unless you say so. Pleaaaase?”
“No, Meta-“ He went back to packing. “Some of you have a habit of not listening to the rules we set.” He said, referring to the Kalmari Forest incident.
“This time will be different!” Arthur decided to cut in. “It’ll also be great training for us! The harsh conditions will make us stronger!”
“Y-yeah!” Falspar added and tried to butter him up, “Perhaps with this training, we can be just a good a flyer as you.
“Please, Teacher Bate?” Dragato and Nonsurat both said in unison just before Meta began speaking again.
“I really wanna see Miss Atka again….I miss her. I know it’s dangerous, but we really, really, really promise we’ll listen and follow all the rules. Can you please let us come along?"
The five heard Bate softly sigh to himself. He reached up tiredly rubbed his temples. Taking care of the five in Kalmari was hard work as it is, but in South Nova….?
It was going to be a huge challenge.
“….Give me a moment to think it over,” He quietly said. “In the meantime, go ask Ramset and Gordon if they’re okay with letting you go."
Even though it wasn’t a yes, the five beamed in happiness and rushed up to hug Bate. “Thank you, Teacher Bate!”
Bate made no reaction from the contact and just waited until all of them were out of his room. He stopped packing for the moment and sat on his bed to think.
“What am I going to do….?” He said to himself knowing it was going to be extremely tiresome watching over five, hyperactive kids.
—--
“I…don’t know.” Ramset spoke with much hesitation in his voice.
It’s not that he doesn’t trust Bate to take care of his precious, most prized students…….
“But Teacher Ramset, we have to go!!” Dragato and Falspar begged.
….It’s just that he doesn’t trust the two to actually behave while he's away.
“Look, you two- I traveled to South Nova when I was younger, and the weather is very unforgiving.”
“Teacher Bate already explained,” Falspar shrugged it off but was quickly hushed,
“LISTEN!” He snapped which caused the two to flinch. It was rare for Ramset to raise his voice at them, so both knew it wasn’t a time to be joking around. Ramset kneeled down and looked at the two with much seriousness in his eyes.
“I won’t be there to protect you this time around.” He said, “You have Bate, and while he’s powerful enough to protect you if you’re in danger- his body isn’t necessarily built for fighting anymore. I need you to not only take care of yourselves, but Bate as well. Listen to him, follow his orders- I expect you to do everything he tells you. Set the playful behavior aside so you don't get him stressed out over this. I want you to be on your perfect, upmost behavior if I allow you to go."
Both gave a silent nod,
“Don’t make me regret this decision. If anything were to happen to the two of you….” The Sasuke stood up and shifted his eyes away from the pair, “….I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.”
Of course, Ramset truly cares for all five of the warriors, but Dragato and Falspar…...they were very special to him- sort of how Meta is to Bate. He’s trained, mentored and raised them as if they were his own. He’s become extremely protective over them, and if they were to get hurt or even die....
Ramset quickly tensed up a bit when he felt the two hug him. He shook his thoughts and looked down where they were standing.
“We promise...” He heard them say, and Ramset picked up the two to return the hug. He eased up a bit and gave them a small smile.
“Alright, then. How…about I help you two pack?”
“Yes!!!!” Both cheered and followed Ramset back to their home.
—--
“Is Bate okay with you going?” Gordon questioned his young apprentice.
“He asked me to tell you if it was okay.” Nonsurat shyly said and waited for Gordon to respond.
“Hm….are you okay with this?”
“Me?” The little Puff questioned,
“Since you can’t fly, you'll have to ride on his back the entire way. You need to stay focused and be alert. If you lose your grip and fall….”
Nonsurat fiercely shook his head, “It won’t, I promise! I wanna go with the others too….”
Gordon gave a nod of approval and patted his head, “I know you do, and I trust Bate enough that he’ll look out and care for you while I’m not, but….’
Nonsurat looked up at his mentor and listened closely to what he had to say.
“It’s going to be a long journey. I need you to really be on guard and not only watch out for yourself, but for the others and Bate as well. You need to listen to everything he says. He was born in South Nova and can withstand the brutal conditions unlike the lot of you. If you, or anyone else needs to rest and warm up- tell him, he’ll be okay with it. He cares for you just as much as I do, understand?"
“I understand,” He nodded.
“Good.” He said and pointed to his room, “Come with me, and I’ll help you pack.”
—--
"Teacher....?" Meta and Arthur called out when they saw him reading in the living room.
Bate, who seemed quite distracted ever since they asked him to go to South Nova with him, looked up from his book and glanced at them.
"Dragato, Falspar and Nonsurat all got permission to go with you...." Meta said,
"Hm," Bate responded. Meta noticed he didn't seem too happy about it.
"We were wondering if.....you were okay with us coming too." Arthur spoke, nervous from his teacher's sour mood.
They heard Bate sigh as he stood up to head to his room. The two followed and joined him when he sat on his bed.
"Aren't you happy? D-Don't you want us to go with you?" Meta said, not sure whether he should ask or not.
"Gumball...." He hesitated, "It's not that I don't want you to go. All five of you don't understand how dangerous South Nova is."
"Dangerous...? Like it has a bunch of demon beasts?"
"There are....some who will attack if you bother them, but that's not what I'm taking about." He took a deep breath and began explaining his reasons. "My reasons are something you're unable to understand unless you've experienced it first hand."
"Huh....?" Both were confused from what he said. Bate reached over and grabbed Meta and Arthur's wings.
"If you get frostbite on your wings, I can't guarantee you'll ever be able to fly again. South Nova isn't feared by the monsters and creatures that wander the land, but the blizzards and storms that could kill you."
Both went completely silent.
"I was one of the lucky ones," He said, "The freezing temperatures nearly killed me as an infant, and I almost lost my wings when I was around your age from getting lost in a blizzard. It wasn't until I grew older and stronger that I was able to withstand the temperatures....but the memory of almost losing my wings still terrifies me even to this day."
"O-oh....we didn't know." Meta softly spoke.
"The last thing I want is for any of you getting killed or severely sick. If you come with me, I need you to promise you'll do everything I tell you."
"We promise, Teacher." They both gave their word; serious and determined to gain his approval.
Bate slightly hummed and went over to his closet and pulled out two, small boxes. "Here."
"Gifts?!!" They both cheered and quickly opened them.
"Oh, wow!!!" Meta shouted as he wrapped the newly knitted scarf around his body. "So does this mean we're really going?!!!"
When they saw him nod, both Puffs ran and embraced the elder.
"Thank you, Teacher!!"
"O-of course." He slightly smiled at the pair and motioned them out of his room to help them pack. "It'll be a long journey to South Nova for you, so let's hurry up and get everything you need for the trip."
"O-oh! Can I bring my candy jar?!!!" Meta hopped up in down in excitement as they left his room.
Bate gave a small chuckle and tried to lighten up his mood, "I'm not sure if that's really an essential item to bring. I don't think it'll even fit in your backpack."
"Awwww...." Meta pouted, but soon stopped when Bate placed his glove over his head,
"But....I'll see if I can fit it in mine." He said with a playful, humorous tone that left the two warriors in a fit of laughter.
“No,” Bate simply said as he started to pack his bag.
“But whyyyy!” All five whined from being rejected. Apparently their words had little to no effect.
