It'll Take Your Breath Away
Chapter. 8
“So….ah…should I be the one to say it, or…..”
“Ramset, shut up.” Bate spoke, trying to enjoy his lunch without a petty fight breaking out.
Dangling from his wings like a wind chime were several strips of paper. Once Ramset and Gordon arrived to have lunch with him, they quickly took notice of it, but dared not to question it until Ramset finally decided to poke fun at them.
“What, I’m just curious about it. Do you want me to dangle some from my hat too?” He tried to suppress his laughter.
“Ramset, enough.” Gordon hushed the Sasuke, feeling that Bate wasn't in the mood to deal with his usual banter. “How about we just enjoy our lunch in peace, okay?”
“Fine, Fine.” He shrugged, popping a fry in his mouth and dropped the subject. He did his best not to bring it up and kept quiet until it was time to clean up. He helped Bate with the dishes, and once he noticed they were alone, he decided to be a bit more serious since he could tell the elder wasn’t enjoying the added attention.
“You know they’re only doing it because they’re worried.” He leaned against the counter while Bate continued cleaning,.
“Yeah, I know.” His voice wasn’t as harsh, but Ramset could sense the weariness in his voice. “I just wish they understood nothing’s going to happen.”
“Well, yeah, you could say that to them…but we all know it’s gonna happen again at some point.”
“I’ve made sure to lock the attic.” He informed.
“No, that’s not what I meant, Bate.” He decided to give him a break and help him. “Remember when I threw that smoke bomb at you when we first met?”
Bate raised a brown when he brought that up, but nodded.
“After that incident, and up until the incident with Meta and Arthur, you’re telling me you never had another asthma attack before?”
“You know I have, Ramset. But it’s not like what happened with you or my students. If I’m able to get to my inhaler in time, I’ll be fine. I was buried under a mountain of dusty boxes, remember?”
“Yah, I remember, but to them it doesn’t matter if it’s something small or severe..” He explained. "That’s what they’re worried about. Once they see you coughing, they’re gonna freak out and panic. That’s why they think doing all of these precautionary procedures will help.”
Giving a weak smile, he gave Bate a small pat on the back. “It’ll pass, don’t worry, Bate. I was on edge when I first witnessed it too. They still have that worrisome mindset that somethings gonna happen to their precious, fragile Teacher.” He playfully teased, giving him several pokes.
“Uh-huh, and how long do you suppose that's going to last?” He asked, trying to swat away his hand.
“Your guess is as good as mine.” He shrugged, finally letting go. “All I’m saying is if you keep saying you’re going to be okay and something does happen to you, you’re going to make the situation even worse."
“Hm…yeah.” He looked out the window where the two were seated. “I’ll keep that in mind…thanks, Ramset."
“No problem. Now come on!” He took his hand to drag him out the door. “I wanna show Grav your wings! He’s gonna have a kick out of it!”
“RAMSET!!!"
