It'll Take Your Breath Away
Chapter. 4
Mends was quite surprised to see his Bate walk through the doors of his clinic. Getting him here was usually next to impossible. Not only that, but it looked like two others were joining him on his visit as well.
"Bate, Meta, Arthur." He spoke, greeting the trio. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your unexpected visit?"
"I hope you don’t mind us visiting. I’m not disrupting anything important, am I?" Bate spoke, not sure if he should've asked beforehand.
"You're not disrupting anything, do not worry." He spoke, waving one of his metal hands in the air. "Hopefully you're not coming here with an emergency, all three of you look like you're at the peak of health...some more than others...." He mumbled, looking at Bate.
"It's not an emergency, but it is something important." He used his wings to slightly push his two students towards him. "I'm here to ask for a small favor."
"Hm?" He hummed, glancing at the two warriors below. He looked up again when Bate spoke.
“You see, I was wondering if you could maybe...ah, lecture them for the afternoon...? After I had my asthma attack, they’ve been worrying nonstop about it. Meta seems to think any little thing will get me sick, and he ended up crying yesterday when he thought I’d get ill from the sand at the beach. I’m…not the best at explaining this sort of thing, so I was wondering if you could do it instead?”
“Ah, that’s right. The two are living with you now, huh?” He spoke. “I assumed you already lectured them on your ailments long ago BUT seeing as you were hospitalized a few weeks back because of it, I was a fool to think you did.” He huffed, turning away. “Better late than never, I suppose. I don’t have anything scheduled, so I’ll be glad to take them for a bit.” He said, motioning the pair to follow him.
Bate watched them leave, and he quickly piped up when Mends started to go without him. “O-oh, should I-“
“I need to have a word with them alone.” He sharply spoke. "I have some questions to ask them, and your presence might….cause them to sway their answer. Head back home and come back in an hour.”
With that, Mends led the pair through the double doors out of the waiting room. Bate was left standing there for a moment before he sighed to himself and headed back home.

“Hm, that’s interesting.” Gordon spoke, sipping his tea. “What do you think he wanted to ask them?”
“Your guess is as good as mine.” He mumbled, leaning against the table. “Probably wanted to see if I was lying about the incident so I wouldn’t get in trouble.”
“You got in trouble anyways.” Gordon pointed out, chuckling a bit when he remembered how furious Mends was.
“Don’t remind me. Still, as long as he lectures them and I don’t have to deal with Meta crying for every little thing I do, I don’t care how much he shouts at me. Sweet Nova, he's worse than you." He joked.
"Hey, someone's has to keep an eye on you. Going into a dusty attic like that, be lucky you didn't receive a lecture from me." He mimicked Bate and slightly teased him.
"Hm, yeah..." His voice trailed off when he said that, and he focused on his tea; swirling his mixing spoon several times before glancing up at his friend again. "About that...."
Bate's voice shifted slightly, and Gordon raised a brow when he noticed the change in his behavior.
"I don't think I ever thanked you for helping me that day. So thank you, and...I'm sorry if I worried you. I know how distressed you get whenever I fall ill."
"Hey, don't worry about it. You're okay, and that's all that matters." Gordon placed a hand on his shoulder, smiling back in hopes he'd do the same. "I'll admit I was quite scared at first. I haven't been that worried since Ramset threw that smoke bomb at you. It's always scary seeing you like that, despite how long I've known you."
"The last thing I want is for Meta and Arthur to do the same." He softly sighed, and took a sip of his tea. "Having them constantly fret about my health isn't something I particularly want. They're just kids."
"I think they'll always worry about you to some degree. Just not as severe like these past few days. They'll be fine once Mends is done talking to them, so relax and let's enjoy the rest of the afternoon."
“Hm, you're right." He smiled back, starting to feel much better about the situation. With Mends' handling the situation, everything is bound to bounce back to normal by the end of the afternoon. Worrying about it seems a bit foolish at this point. Yes, the best thing he could do is listen to Gordon and enjoy the evening.
