It'll Take Your Breath Away
Chapter. 2
“Did he die?” Falspar asks, resting his head on the grass once Meta finished telling his story.
“No, he just coughed a lot. Teacher Gordon had to take him to see Mends because he wouldn’t stop.” He looked away in shame when he mentioned that.
“Gee, I don’t think I ever came close to killing Teacher Ramset before.” Dragato says, slightly concerned over the well-being of his previous teacher. “Is he gonna be okay?”
“Teacher Gordon told us he’ll be fine. He, umm....just needs to rest for the day.” He gives a frown, still troubled by it.
From above the trees, Ramset quietly hears Meta and his students discuss the situation with Bate. Eventually, he jumps down and joins the group as well. Dragato and Falspar head towards their teacher once they see him, and Meta timidly focuses on the grass below.
“So, Bate’s doing okay then?” He asks in a worried tone.
Meta gives a nod. He never heard him act so serious before. Just knowing someone like Ramset is concerned causes his stomach to turn.
“That’s good to hear.” He gives a sigh of relief. “Give ol’ Bate my regards when you see him later on. I’d visit, but even I know to give him a little r&r when his health starts giving him a hard time.
Meta doesn’t respond, and just uses his wings to hug himself. “Teacher’s gonna hate me.”
“Oh, I doubt Bate would even consider the idea of such a thing. It was just an accident.” He gives the small puff a pat on the head. His words does little to ease him, so Ramset takes a seat across from him with Falspar and Dragato following soon after.
“Y’know, I accidentally did something quite similar to Bate when we first met.” He weakly smiles at them as he begins to tell his story.
“Like you, I didn’t know about Bate’s ailments when I first met him. The incident may not be as intense as having a mountain of boxes falling on him, but throwing a smoke bomb his way landed me in hot water with Gordon. Granted, I didn’t know it would send him to the hospital soon after, but I still felt horrible for what I did.” And his eyes soften at the small warrior in front of him. “I’m guessing that’s what you’re feeling right about now, huh?”
Meta gives a nod.
“It’s good you recognize the consequences of your actions. And if you’re like me, you’ll pay attention in the future, so it doesn’t happen again."
“B-but what if it /does/ happen again?” He begins to tear up. “What if I accidentally do something, and he has to go to the emergency room like today? He’s gonna avoid, or get rid of me because of it!”
“Getting rid of you is a bit of a stretch, Meta.” He chuckles. “But it is possible it may happen again. I’ve known Bate long before you lot were even born, and it’s not uncommon for his ailments to start acting up. While I don’t live with Bate, I know accidents like this will happen from time to time. He's always had these sorts of complications, and seeing as you’re living with him now, you’ll probably see him coughing more, compared to only class hours.” He says. “If you’re truly worried about it, how about you talk to him, or even Gordon?”
“They tried, but…I guess I wasn’t really paying attention.” He frowned, recalling all the times he focused his attention elsewhere when they were lecturing him. The idea of moving in with his mentors, and living in a new home took all his attention away from any important information they may have told him.
“Well, after this incident, I’m sure you’ll be getting an earful.” He stands up and motions his students to head back home. “I’m sure Gordon’s waiting for your arrival. Just remember what we talked about, and you’ll be fine.”
Meta gave a small nod. “O-okay. Thanks, Teacher Ramset.”
“Sure, no problem kiddo.” He gives a small wave.
