-In Good Hands-
(Meta / Falspar)
The sound of his mentor's tea kettle is like Meta’s personal alarm clock. Usually he’d wake to the sound of Kirby. Since arriving in Kalmari, however, the small warrior’s having too much fun sleeping over at his cousin’s house. Meta thought he’d get a chance to sleep in, but the loud whistling sound seeping through the walls of his old room proved otherwise. Letting out a small yawn, the warrior trudged his way out to greet his mentor. It didn’t take long for him to reach the kitchen, and he he gave a small wave in the midst of another yawn.
“Good morning, Teacher.” He greeted.
“Good morning, Gumball.” Bate responded as he removed the kettle from the stove.
“Aaaay! G’morning, ya sleepy head.” A voice called out soon after Bate had spoke.
Meta’s posture faltered slightly when he recognized the voice. He gave a small groan as he didn’t feel like dealing with his happy, boisterous behavior right now.
“What are you doing here, Falspar….” He turned around to face the puff.
“Nice to see you again, too, ya runt.” He slightly smiked in amusement before talking a small sip of his drink. “Can’t your comrade come by and visit once ’n awhile?”
“Not when I’m visiting…..” He grumbled back, heading into the kitchen to help his mentor with breakfast.
To his surprise, the countertop was already filled with several dishes. Eggs, bacon, toast, and even pancakes. He didn’t expect his mentor to cook such a feast, especially since Kirby and Kes isn't here to eat most of it. He shyly glanced at Bate for a moment before the old warrior turned around to lightly pat his head.
“Falspar helped me while you were still resting. The only thing I just about made was the tea."
“Uhh...Falspar?” He blinked in disbelief.
“What, surprised?” The green puff sneered.
Meta slightly jumped when Falspar appeared from behind.
“I figured you’d be too tired to help Teacher Bate, so I dropped by to lend a hand. Kes came by my house earlier today to pick up Kirby, but he wanted to stay a bit longer with the others. They're currently eating at my place as we speak!” He smiled, taking a seat and waited for the pair to join him.
Once Bate sat down, Meta made his way into the dining room as well. Before Meta had time to even pick up a plate to serve himself, Falspar started to assemble everything for them. He lowered his hand, and watched as he served a plate to Bate first, and then to him.
“Hm, thanks…” Meta spoke, as he grabbed it. Once Falspar finished serving a plate for himself, Meta reached for his fork and took a few bites of the eggs he made.
The warrior blinked in surprise. It was actually…good? He knew the warrior is good at baking, but didn’t think he was capable of making a palatable breakfast without the help of Nova crunch being poured on it.
Falspar could clearly sense his reaction, and gave a small chuckle.
“Y’know…I do cook for my family.” He spoke, still laughing. “I like to serve Tula other things aside from Nova Crunch….and Pyrell was getting pretty tired of eating cold cereal all the time.” He quickly added the last part.
Meta responded with a silent nod and continued to finish his meal. He quietly listened to Falspar talk to his mentor about several future events he wanted him to attend. Meta would already be gone by that time, but it was nice hearing how happy the elder sounded. He always did like spending time with his grandchildren.
Meta eventually piped up when he heard that he’ll be attending one of the firework celebrations several towns away. He knew his mentor wasn’t the type to travel long distances, and the thought of him being so far away from home couldn’t help but make him slightly anxious.
“Oh, umm…Teacher, are you sure you’ll be okay?”
“No need to worry about me, Gumball.” Bate reassured, not worried like he was.
“I’ve already rented a place for all of us to stay in.” Falspar spoke soon after and gave him a thumbs up. “It’s one of the best areas to stay at during the festival. Teacher Bate’s gonna love it, nothing to worry about.”
“Says you.” Meta clearly didn’t seem as happy like the others. He pressed his concerns to his mentor, but Falspar kept butting in before he even had the chance to speak.
“Meta, relax.” He gave him a pat on the back and started to stack the dishes since everyone was just about finished. “Sweet Nova, by the way you’re describing it, you’re making it seem like Pyrell and I are a bunch of irresponsible goofballs.”
“The last thing I need is to fly back here because someone was being careless and irresponsible.”
Bate and Falspar heard the distaste in his words. Just as Bate was about to speak, Falspar gave an awkward laugh that cut him off.
“Same old protective Meta I see.” His voice had a hint of sadness to it that Bate and Meta clearly picked up. The warrior figured maybe it would be best if he left to let his comrade cool off. "Well, ah- I should really check in on Pyrell to make sure everything’s okay.“
He placed the final dish in the sink, and gave a small wave to the pair. “I’ll, ah...talk to you guys later. See ya.” And with that, Falspar closed the door and left Bate to handle Meta. There was a long pause after he left, and eventually Bate spoke.
"Metameios Bate.”
Meta flinched when his full named was used. He hasn’t remembered the last time he called him by that, so he had a bad feeling he really messed up. The warrior looked towards him, slightly timid as if he were a child again getting scolded.
“What you said to Falspar was very rude and disrespectful, and I expect you to apologize to him when you pick up Kirby."
“But Teacher-“
“But nothing, Meta. I don’t think you realize how much Falspar does for me when you’re away. For you to say that to him is not acceptable. He was clearly hurt when you said that.”
“I say a lot of things to Falspar, I don’t know why he decided to take it so personal this time.”
“You getting angry about his pranks and jokes is not the same as this. I don’t know where you thought it would be okay to treat your comrades like that, but this better be the last time I see you behave in such a manner.”
Instead of arguing back, Meta sat in silence, and tried to absorb what Bate said. He didn’t think he mentor would take it so personal- he always snaps at Falspar for the stupidest of things. Bate never intervened back then, so why was everyone so angry about it?
Bate could clearly see how troubled his student was becoming, so he reached over to place a hand on his shoulder. With a much softer voice than before, Bate decided to ease up.
“Since we live in different times zones, Falspar takes it upon himself and calls me each morning to make sure I’m doing okay. He helps me around the house, he takes me to my appointments, he even takes time out of his own schedule to help me if I’m sick. I know you still see him as that carefree joker, but he’s matured and changed over the years. So please talk to him, Meta. Don’t leave Pop Star on a sour note.
Eventually, Meta gave a nod. “Alright, I’ll apologize.”
“Thank you, Gumball.” Bate smiled. “I know he’ll really appreciate it. I’m sure he’s already back at his house, so be sure to say it when you visit.”
“Yeah, I’ll get on it right now. Nova knows I don’t need him moping the rest of the day.” He got up from his seat and headed to his room to fetch his armor.
“Good morning, Teacher.” He greeted.
