Thanks to Gordon, Mends finds out that the name plate that fell from the office door belongs to the deceased wife of Bate. He is still left in the dark about most things in this town, however, but will respect Gordon’s request of not badgering Bate about it.
And yes, if you didn't get the memo, 'Bate' is his last name. His first name has yet to be revealed.
