Yes, Bate does try to kill himself after the death of Ellie. (And Atler) The weight of losing his family, and..ah, other things that will be mentioned later on, was far too great for him. He went into Gordon's room while he was out and grabbed one of the swords hanging on the wall...and, well, you know the rest. Miraculously, Bate survived, thanks to Gordon who found him. There were times when I wrote this where I actually wondered what was going through Gordon's head at the time; seeing as his best friend tried taking his life. (And yes...if you were wondering why Gordon is so protective over him...this is the main reason why.)
