Dear Diary
Sir Bate / Sir Gordon / Sir Ramset
“It’s almost been a week already, did you figure out what’s wrong with him yet?”
Ramset gave an exasperated sigh and eyed the Gordo sitting across from him. If anything, Gordon should’ve been the one to figure it out by now- he lives with the Puffball for Nova’s sake! As he waited for a response, his mind started to wander what the answer could be. When Gordon finally looked up to respond, Ramset gave him his complete attention- eagerly tapping his fingers on the table he was leaning on.
“I….don’t know.” Came a quite, somber response.
Well, that wasn’t the answer he wanted to hear. Ramset stared at his friend in disbelief and repeated the answer he was given.
“What do you mean you don’t know? You’re his best friend, aren’t you?”
“Ah, shut up!” Gordon snapped back, “Don’t put this all on me, you know how stubborn he can be.”
“Yeah, well....” Ramset huffed and crossed his arms, “I’m getting pretty tired of his behavior. Did you know I drew on his mask yesterday and he didn’t even say anything about it?”
“I can't believe it…”
“I know, right?” He said, but let out a loud yelp when Gordon hit him on the side of the head. “H-hey! What was that for?”
“What I meant was I can't believe you did that knowing something's troubling him. What kind of friend are you anyways?"
“The type who hopes to get a response from him, that’s what!” He swatted his hand away, “He always gets mad when I do that, so I thought doing it would trigger some type of emotion....but apparently it didn’t.”
The Gordo just looked away. For the first time years, Gordon felt completely disconnected with Bate. He was always able to easily read his emotions like an open book, but the past week has been a huge struggle. No matter what he says, or what he does, Gordon was unable to figure out what was troubling his best friend. Just the mere thought of it was starting to get him stressed out.
Ramset frowned and started to tap his fingers on the table again. “Very…troubling.”
“Y-yes, very....”
The two continued to ponder for the rest of the evening until their thoughts were finally interrupted when Bate came home. The two stared at the Puffball when he walked in, not sure if one of them should speak up. Ramset lightly nudged Gordon to say something as he was too afraid to do so.
“B-bate!” Gordon happily greeted, “How was your evening?”
He was responded by a small shrug followed by him making his way to his room. Ramset knew he’ll stay in there for the rest of the night, so he took it upon himself to try to stop him.
“Bate, Bate, Bate!!!” Ramset got up and stood in front of him. “I was thinking all three of us should go out for a drink! It’s been quite some time since we last did that and-“
“No, thank you,” Bate cut him off and continued to head to his room. “I’m a bit tired so I’m turning in for tonight…”
“O-oh...well, maybe tomorrow?” He suggested. When he didn’t get a response back, Ramset frowned a bit and looked back at Gordon who gave an equally hurt expression. Once the door to his room clicked, both gave a sigh at their failed attempt.
“Gee, that turned out well....” Ramset said as he sat back down.
Gordon didn’t respond and continued to look down the hallway. When the light of Bate’s room finally shut off, Gordon angrily mumbled to himself.
“Darn it, Bate…what’s going on with you?”
--
The next day, Gordon made sure to get up extra early to make Bate his favorite breakfast but mentally slapped himself when he found out Bate already left the house. Ramset, who arrived around an hour later peeked in and noticed Gordon sulking near one of the couches.
“Did he leave again?”
“It’s like he knew I was going to get up early or something….” He said, not sure how he could’ve known. “Did…I do something to make him mad?”
“You? Of course not.” He reassured, and then pulled something out from under his hat to show Gordon. “But not to worry! By today we'll find out what’s bugging ‘ol Bate.”
Gordon just stared at the object in his hand, not sure if what he was saying was a good idea. “I don’t think breaking into his room without permission is a smart idea…”
“Hey, you wanna know what’s troubling him correct?”
“Yes….”
“And you’re wiling to do anything to make sure he’s safe, yes?”
“I guess….”
“Good! Then shut up and help me pick the lock!” He said as he made a mad dash to Bate's room. Gordon, who slowly followed from behind started to have second thoughts about Ramset’s “helpfulness”
--
“Huh, everything seems....normal. Suspicious indeed.”
Ramset stepped in and noticed nothing really changed from when Bate started acting weird a week or so ago. Gordon just rolled his eyes from the Sasuke's stupid observation and headed to one of his drawers to snoop.
“Let’s just hurry up, I don’t want Bate to see us going through his things....”
“Yeah, yeah…” Ramset said as he went towards Bate’s bed and started rummaging through his nightstand. When he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary, he decided to head to his desk while Gordon searched through his closet.
“Nothing!” Ramset whined as he started flipping through the pages of one of the books Bate had in hopes he’d find something.
“Same…” Gordon shut the closet and went towards Ramset who was still going through the small pile of books. Gordon saw it was just a few books that his friend, Atka, gave to him many years ago. He knew it wouldn’t give off any clues to their friends behavior, so he told Ramset to place them back and head out.
“Hey, wait! I think I found something!” Ramset called out. He waved his hands to gain Gordon’s attention and showed him a old, very worn book. The cover had a gold plate with Bate’s named engraved on it. The two eyed the old book, contemplating if they should open it.
“Do you know what it is?” Ramset asked.
Gordon took the book and inspected it. “No….I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before. Where did you find it?”
Ramset pointed to a small opening on his desk that was hidden behind a stack of books, old paperwork and a few photos of him when he was much younger. He took the book from Gordon’s hand and slightly opened to read the first page.
“Huh, this was dated back almost “3,000 years ago…” He looked at Gordon and then flipped to the last page, "Hm? But this page was dated only a few days back."
“A diary…?” Gordon suggested.
“Probably,” Ramset said as he randomly flipped to one of the pages to read it.
“Winter quickly came to our little town, and I couldn’t be happier. Ellie’s been talking nonstop about a celebration where everyone exchanges gifts. Such an odd tradition, but I surly hope it will be exciting and thrilling as she says it would be."
Gordon’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly snatched the book away from him. The words Ramset spoke left an eerie chill in his spikes. The book he was holding wasn't just a journal, it was all of Bate’s memories and thoughts of when he and Ellie were together. Just knowing he was holding something extremely precious to Bate made him regret snooping in the first place.
“W-we shouldn’t be reading this.” Gordon said as he set the book back on the desk. “It’s not right…..I…I don’t feel comfortable doing this.”
“But Gordon….this could be our only break.” Ramset said, “Don’t you want to know what’s wrong with Bate?”
“I do, but…” He looked at the book and turned away in shame, “But not like this….”
Gordon grabbed the knob of Bate’s door and turned it, “Now let’s go before Bate finds us in here….”
The Gordo called again when he didn’t get a response. “Ramset...?" Gordon turned around and gasped in fear when he saw Ramset reading it again. “You idiot! Put that back!!”
He summoned his hands and started to pull on the book. Ramset who was trying to read the last entry, tugged it towards him. “Hold on! Let me just read the last page!!"
“No! Do you even know how disrespectful that is?!!” He gripped the book harder and tried to pull it away from him.
“You’re the one who agreed to snoop too!” He refused to let go, “Your hands are no cleaner than mine.”
“Well at least I’m trying to fix it!” He shouted,
“You’re not fixing anything!” Ramset shouted back, “We still don’t know what’s wrong with Bate!”
“Well doing this isn’t going to help!”
“Yes it will!!” Ramset argued back, pulling the book harder.
“No it won’t!!!” Gordon yelled, mimicking Ramset's actions.
“Yes it will!!!”
“No it won’t!!”
The two were so occupied shouting on what’s best that they didn’t notice Bate enter the room. When the elder saw them fighting over the fragile book, he quickly went over to stop the two from pulling it apart.
“What the hell are you two doing?!!” Bate shouted as loud as he could. When the pair saw Bate looming over, they immediately dropped the book and backed away. Bate proceeded to bend down and pick it up.
The two were dead silent as he opened it up and a few pages fell. Gordon mentally cursed to himself when he knew they broke the binding.
Bate set the book down on his desk and pointed to the door. Both knew he wanted them to leave. Gordon softly mumbled an apology and started to head out as well as Ramset. As the Sasuke was about to close the door, he suddenly stopped and looked back at Bate.
“Y’know what,” He said as he gripped the handle in anger. “No, I’m not going to do this anymore."
He stood at the doorway and looked at Bate. “All we were doing was trying to figure out why you’ve been acting so weird. Is it so hard to tell us, Bate? We’ve been your friends for how many years now…..don’t you trust us?”
“Ramset….” Gordon whispered, trying to nudge him out.
“No, Gordon!” Ramset snapped back, and focused on Bate again “I’m so sick of tired of seeing you like this! Get angry! Yell at us or something, but stop ignoring and avoiding us!! We’re hurting just as much when you’re acting like this, Bate, so quit this damn, stubborn attitude of yours and TALK!”
Gordon just stood there, shocked from Ramset’s outburst. Something he must've said worked since Bate was just as shocked as well. The elder, after a few minutes of absorbing what Ramset said looked at the book and pulled out one of the pages. He stared at the lone page for what seemed like an eternity before softly reading it to the pair.
“I sometimes forget that you’re not here with me anymore. I wake up everyday and look to my side only to realize that you’re not there. It still hurts to know a huge part of my life that I cherished each and everyday isn’t here to greet and fill my world with the adventures we once promised. Although I have a new family that I am deeply grateful for, a small part of me still holds on to the past that I can’t seem to let go of. This week is especially difficult as it was the last time I saw you."
Ramset flinched a bit when he read that line. Now he understood why he’s been so down and distant lately. He slightly looked up at Gordon and saw his eyes were filling up with tears.
"I still long to hold you in my arms once more and tell you how much I love you. When I got the news that I lost you, my whole world came crashing down. I didn’t just lose a wife that day; I lost my world, my happiness...and my joy. Ellie, I am truly sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me the most.”
Bate placed the paper down and looked at the pair who now had tears dibbling down their face. Ramset was the first to crack and ran towards the elder.
“BAAAAAATE!!!” He ran over and hugged him. “I’m so sorry!! I…I….AHHHH BAAAAAAATE!!!!!” Ramset just sobbed and continued to hold and cry out his name.
“B-Bate…” Gordon looked away, hurt how he completely forgot this was the week Ellie left for the war. “I…I’m sorry. I…had no idea.”
“Gordon, it’s okay,” He said, trying to push Ramset away.
“No it’s not, Bate. Why didn’t you tell us?” He asked, “I know you prefer keeping stuff like this to yourself, but….”
The Gordon went over and joined Ramset. He hugged his best friend and started to cry. “P-please…you don’t have to be alone anymore- we’re here for you. I promised......I gave Ellie my word before she left that I’d protect and watch over you. You don’t know how much it hurts me seeing you like this. I don't see you as just a friend, Bate....we're family. Please trust me when I say we’ll help you get through this. She would’ve wanted it that way...."
Gordon could feel Bate starting to tense up, which made him cry even more. The elder closed his eyes, and for the first time in nearly 3,000 years, he hugged his two friends and cried. Gordon and Ramset knew this was the time Bate needed them the most, so when their sobs eventually died down, they continued to hold Puffball who was still mourning the loss of his wife. None said a word as he kept weeping, and when he eventually let up Gordon helped him to his bed and stayed by his side.
Bate looked away in embarrassment. It wasn’t like him to burst out and cry like that, especially not in front of Gordon and Ramset. He knew he was stronger than that. Crying and hugging...? He never felt so ashamed, so weak, so vulnerable, so….
“Please don’t turn away from us….”
Bate's thoughts were suddenly interrupted when he felt something grab his arm.
“Ever since we first met in North Nova, I know how stubborn and hard headed you can be, but you don’t have to be like that anymore. Not around us..."
“Listen to Gordy, Bate.” Ramset intervened, “While I admit I may not be seen as the comforting type, you’re my friend…and I care about you. Don’t get me wrong, though- I'll still play pranks on you, and I’ll keep on badgering you, but when you need someone to be with during a moment like this…well, you know you can count on me to be there for you.”
“And of course you can always count on me,” Gordon added.
Bate timidly looked up and saw them with a comforting, supportive smile on their faces. In the past, Bate would've yelled and told them to get lost if they ever tried to comfort him, but this time….this time was different. Slowly but surly a smile formed on the elders face, and he sheepishly rubbed the back of his head from their kind gesture.
“Thank you- I’ll, ummm...remember that.” His response was short, but Gordon and Ramset knew it was sincere.
This led Ramset to nudge the elder and suggest they get something to drink as a way to tie things up. Bate playfully hit him with his wing and headed towards the door.
“Fine, but you’re not having any. You and I both know you can’t hold down your liquor.”
“Whaaaaat?” Ramset jumped off Bate’s bed and chased him out the door. “C’mon, Bate! I swear it’ll be different this time!”
Gordon smiled and watched as the bickering duo headed out before taking his leave. He suddenly stopped and glanced back at Bate's desk where the damaged journal was placed. A photo of Bate and Ellie was next to it, and Gordon cried happy tears as he picked up the picture.
"It has been quite a hectic week, but don't worry.....your husband's doing just fine now."
Ramset gave an exasperated sigh and eyed the Gordo sitting across from him. If anything, Gordon should’ve been the one to figure it out by now- he lives with the Puffball for Nova’s sake!
