Cure for Nightmares
Sir Bate / Meta
"Teacher...." Meta quietly whispered to the elder. "Teacher, could you get up?"
The tiny Puffball's voice went unheard, however. He knew his teacher was a heavy sleeper, and that trying to wake him up with a soft, quiet voice would be ineffective. He thought of yelling to wake him up, but he didn't want to wake Teacher Gordon who was resting in the other room. The little Puffball decided to jump on his bed and slightly shake his wings. He hoped his teacher would hurry and wake up.
---
"Stp...shking.....my..wngs...." Bate mumbled into his pillow when he felt something touch his wings. He had a good idea who it was, but he was too tired to deal with him today. The elder bucked his wings in hope that he would stop.
"Teacherrrr...." He heard the soft whines of his student. He tried to ignore it, but unfortunately, Meta was just as stubborn as him. Bate slightly looked up from his pillow and grabbed the clock on his nightstand.
2:45 A.M.
He let out a tired sigh and faced his student. "Meta, it's late and I'm tired, what do you want?"
"I..., ummmm...." Meta started to fidget.
Bate waited for him to say something, but after a few minutes of silence, he grew agitated.
"If you have nothing to say," He pointed to his door, "Then go to your room and go back to sleep."
Meta fiercely shook his head when he said that.
"I don't want to." He grabbed a part of the covers and slightly covered himself with them. "I'm scared...."
"If something woke you up, it was probably the wind, I told you that already." He reassured the puffball. "Nothing's going to hurt you, now go back to your r-"
"N-NO!!!" Meta yelled and burrowed deep into the blanket. "P-please...don't..."
Bate never seen his student overreact like this before. He's had to wake up a few times over the month because his student was scared- but after turning on all the lights, checking under the bed and closet, he would usually go back to sleep without a problem. It baffled Bate that Meta refused to listen to him. He lifted the blanket and saw the terrified face of his student staring at him.
'....I guess sleep could wait later.' He thought to himself.
"What's wrong? Why are you crying?" He asked the tear stricken Puffball.
Meta shook his head and didn't respond. Bate grabbed the tiny warrior and set him in front of him.
"Did you have a nightmare?"
"......."
Meta looked away from the elder and wiped the tears from his face. Bate waited for the Puffball to calm down before asking him again. When he finally did, Bate's question was responded with a timid nod.
"Do you want to tell me about it?"
Meta shook his head as more tears started to fall. Bate frowned when he saw how troubled his student was. He tried to think of something that would help coax the frightened warrior. He knew candy would keep him up all night, and trying to get him to talk wouldn't help. He pondered ideas until he finally thought of something.
Meta looked up when he saw his teacher starting to walk out of the room. He quickly ran after him and clutched his wings for dear life. Bate patted his head to calm him and walked to the middle of the hallway. He stretched one of his wings so he could pull the chain hanging from the ceiling. A small latter unfolded and Bate started to climb it to reach the attic.
"T-teacher, why are we here?" He softly mumbled into the elders wings.
"Just wait..." He walked towards a few boxes and tried to find the one he was looking for. "You'll see."
Meta nodded and followed Bate. The elder continued to search though the room, but so far he couldn't find the box he wanted. He started to wonder if Gordon accidentally threw it away while he was cleaning. He was about to head out of the attic to ask him, but something caught his eye in the back corner of the room. It was an old box with hideous scribbles of crayon and paint all over it. He slightly smiled and grabbed the box. Bate motioned Meta to head out and go back to his room.
---
Meta looked at the box and poked it a few times. "Ummm, what's in it?"
Bate grabbed a cloth to properly dust it before opening it. "It's a bunch of, ummmm....momentums I've kept since I was a kid." He continued dusting. "I think there's something in here that may help you."
When Bate finished cleaning it, he opened the flaps and pushed the box towards Meta so he could see what was inside. The tiny Puffball reached in and grabbed a bunch of papers with drawings on them. Meta smiled when he saw his teacher's childlike drawings.
"Teacher, you're not a good artist." He slightly giggled.
Bate embarrassingly rubbed the back of his head and snatched the papers away. "I was a child when I drew them, of course they're bad."
Bate grabbed the box and reached in to find what he was really looking for. He rummaged through a few photos and toys before pulling out a small, stuffed bear. He nuzzled it for a moment and put it in front of Meta.
"Here, you can have this."
"Hm?" Meta grabbed the plush and studied it. It was a worn, stuffed bear wearing a blue cape and holding a tiny sword.
"Ummm..." Bate slightly blushed. "My friend made it for me when I was a kid. She told me that if I ever had a nightmare, he would protect me from them. It seemed to work....well, for the most part it did."
"Huh? Really?" Meta smiled when he heard him say that.
"Really." He patted his head. "So you don't have to worry about nightmares when he's around, because he'll make sure to protect you."
Meta snuggled the bear and hugged his teacher for the gift. "Thank you, Teacher."
"You're welcome." Bate grabbed his blanket and covered all three of them. "But since this is a really bad nightmare we're dealing with, I'll help him watch over for tonight."
Meta nodded and nuzzled both of his protectors. He yawned and started to doze off. Bate stayed up all night to watch over the tiny warrior. When the sun started to rise he slightly smiled to himself and closed his eyes.
"It still works...." He mumbled and fell asleep.
"No more nightmares...."
