Checking in on a Friend
Ekon / Drani
The question of how someone as kind and caring as her could be stuck with someone so horrible and cruel was absolutely mind boggling for the Guardian known as Ekon. She doesn’t deserve to be with someone like him- who in their right mind attacks their own Guardian and sends them to the infirmary?! Just the thought of it left a bitter taste in his mouth. He let out a somber sigh and eventually nudged the door of Pyrell’s dorm to let himself in.
His angry features were quickly replaced with a warm smile when he saw her resting near the windowsill. Ever since she got injured, Ekon took it upon himself to keep her company everyday- a kind gesture, and nothing more he would say to the other Guardians when they questioned him about it. He quietly made his way towards her and placed a small object next to her wing.
“I see zey 'ave finally released you.” He said, taking a seat next to her. “I vent to visit, and Sir Falspar informed me zat you vere ‘ear.”
The salmon colored bird opened her eyes and smiled at the large, blue-like bird next to her. “My master thought recovering here would be better than the infirmary. It’s much nicer and quieter.”
Ekon shifted his gaze and eyed the sleeping Leo behind them. His anger slightly rising from the sheer presence of him. Drani saw and quickly focused on the item next to her wing.
“Oh, you didn’t have to bring me anything, you’re too kind.” She poked the orange like tomato and slightly nibbled on it. Ekon tore his stare from Pyrell and focused back on her.
“I vecall zis particular tomato has ze ability to heal.” He nudged the maximum tomato closer to her, “Please eat it all, you vill feel much better."
“You didn’t have to do that,” She said, taking another, small bite. “Shouldn’t you give it to your master instead?”Drani’s voice quietly whispered the last part, not sure if it was her business bringing him up. Ekon merely shook his head at her concern,
“My master vill be just fine,” He reassured, “He is recovering quite vell….he, ummm…vill be released by next veek."
“O-oh, that’s good.” She softly spoke, “I’m glad he’s doing better…."
The two sat in silence for a bit, not a single word or chirp spoken between them. Drani continued to quietly peck at the fruit while Ekon closed his eyes to contemplate his thoughts. Once Ekon sensed that she finished, he opened his eyes and looked at her.
“He’s doesn’t treat you vight. No master should ever lay a 'and on zeir Guardian like zat."
Ekon gave an angry huff and focused on her wrapped wing and body. He lightly shook his head to clear his mind, still weary from the whole incident with their masters a few weeks back. He didn’t realize how dangerous her master was until he almost gave his life to protect his. Just thinking about it left a chilling shiver in the back of his mind.
“My master could take you in, if you vould like,” Ekon offered, “And I’ll be sure to protect you if he ever tries to 'urt you again.”
Drani shook her head and politely declined. She ruffled her feathers a bit and shuffled closer to her friend. She knew he was trying to help, but the truth was that she didn’t need it. No one understood Pyrell like her, and because of it, others judge him without getting to know the reason why he behaves the way he does.
“I will be okay, thank you. I know you don’t like him, but he’s not what you portray him to be."
“…..He almost killed my master.” He stated with distaste and looked away in anger, “ It vas supposed to be a quick sparring match, not a battle to ze death. I vill never forgive him for vat he did."
“I understand,” She gave a small sigh and focused on the small window across from her. “I really do apologize for what he’s done."
“Zen tell me vhy? Vhy do you still stay be his side? Vhy are you still protecting him after all he ‘as done?"
Drani continued to stare out the window, only to slightly glance at Ekon for a second when she felt him staring at her for an answer. “If I don’t, who else is going to be there for him?”
“No one. He doesn’t deserve it.” He spat, “No one who 'urts zeir other 'alf should. He shouldn’t even be given a Guardian, let alone ze title of Star Varrior."
Drani slightly frowned and disagreed, "We live in two very different worlds, you and I. Lord Pyrell's needs may differ from what your master asks of you. Not every Guardian and Star Warrior are born alike, I’m sure you know.”
“Of course, but-”
“My master isn’t like yours” She continued, “Sir Arthur didn’t grow up in the same environment like my master did. You don’t know what he had to endure before arriving here, Sir Ekon, so please don’t disrespect my master when you know absolutely nothing.”
Ekon slightly flinched when he heard the rise in her voice and quietly mumbled an apology, “I…I did not mean to offend you….please forgive me."
He lowered his head in shame. He didn’t mean to get her angry; that was actually the last thing he wanted to do when he visits. All he wanted was to keep her safe and prevent another incident from happening, but now thinking over the conversation they just had, maybe she really didn’t need it.
Drani lifted up her tail and brushed the side of his cheek to gain his attention. "You’re very kind, Ekon, but there’s so much you don’t understand."
“I could tell….” He lifted his tail and mimicked the same action as her, “I….just don’t like seeing you ‘urt.” Ekon slightly shifted his position and embarrassingly focused his attention on the floor. “Y-you’re, ummm….vell….I-I mean….“
“Drani,” A voice called out,
Ekon’s movements faltered when he heard that voice. He slightly backed up in fear when he saw the bright blue glowing flame reflected on the glass window.
Pyrell was up.
The Warrior walked towards the two, and Ekon saw Drani beam with her usual heartfelt smile as if nothing else was important but making sure he was okay.
“My master, how was your sleep?”
She was responded with a small nod- not much, but it was apparently good enough for her. Ekon watched as he put his pauldrons and head piece on before heading to the door, completely ignoring the fact that he was sitting right next to her.
“I’m…heading out for a walk. Will you be alright while I’m gone?” He asked.
“Please don’t fret over me, I’ll be fine.” She chirped and slightly flapped her wings the best she could. “You’ve done more than enough, Lord Pyrell, enjoy your stroll.”
Ekon could’ve swore he saw a hurt, concerned look on the Leo's face when she flapped her wings, but…
When the door finally shut, he lifted his wing and carefully hugged the cheerful bird to halt her movement.
“You should not be flapping like zat,” He suggested,
“Oh, I know,” She settled down and took her place next to him again. “I just wanted him to know I was fine. If not, he would’ve been too concerned and wouldn’t have left."
“Hm?” He questioned, “Because…you veren’t 'appy?"
“He really does care for me, Sir Ekon.” She happily replied, “That’s why he was sleeping when you first arrived. He was up all night watching over me.”
“Somehow I cannot picture such a 'sing.” He spoke to himself,
She let out a small giggle. “Will your Master not do the same if you were hurt?"
“I’m…..sure he would.”
He tried to think back, but never recalled him and Arthur actually spending much time together unless it was regarding war. Ekon will only be by his side when he was asked to, and nothing more. But that’s what Guardians are for, though, right? Their purpose is to watch over and help their master, not the other way around, correct? But...Drani and Pyrell didn’t follow he same ethics as him, or any of the other Guardians he knew. Even though he’s never once fought with Arthur before, their relationship doesn’t seem nearly as strong as the one Drani and Pyrell shared.
The Guardian couldn't help but shake his head. All this thinking was way too much for just a simple visit, Ekon thought to himself.
“Sir Ekon?”
Ekon shook away his thoughts and focused on the real reason he was here. “Yes, Miss Drani?”
"I know you do not prefer to be around my master, but please know he would never intentionally hurt me." She spoke, "He has risked his life for me more times than I can remember. He is my other half, and he knows that more than anyone." She spoke, "And I will always be there for him no matter what."
Ekon could only blink in slight confusion. Maybe....there's more to her words than he originally thought. With a small smile, Ekon gave a nod. "Yes, I understand. Vile I do not agree with your master, I trust and respect your decision."
"Thank you, Sir Ekon." She gave a small yawn and settled back in her bed.
"No, thank you." He quietly spoke and continued to watch over her until her master returned.
