Fond Memories
(Sir Bate / Kirby)
Visiting Kalmari is like….a sweet treat, Kirby would describe. Much better than watermelon, ice cream or anything of the sorts mashed into one. His reason being is that someone very close to the warrior resides there; someone he’d wish he could see more often.
Meta Knight, the sole caretaker of the rambunctious child often explains that due to the long distance between Pop Star and Kalmari, they could visit only a few times out of the year. Because of it, Kirby makes sure to spend as much time with this special someone as possible, for who knows when the next time they’ll see each other again!
—--
Kirby eagerly bounced up and down as Meta lightly knocked on the door of his old caretaker, Sir Bate. It’s been a few months since their last visit, and the warrior decided it would be nice to pop on by as he does tend to worry about his teacher quite often. When the door finally clicked, Kirby spent no time pushing the door open and letting himself in. Meta slightly shook his head from his boisterous personality.
‘You think spending 3 days on the Halberd would cause some type of jet lag on the boy.’ He thought to himself as he walked in soon after. His eyes softened at the sight of the little warrior happily greeting and hugging the old flight instructor he’s grown so fond of.
Kneeling down, Bate cradled the young child and returned his greeting. “Kirby, it’s so nice to see you again.”
“It’s nice to see you too, Grandfather Bate.” Kirby cheeped and continued to hug the elder, “I’ve missed you so much.”
Meta felt a slight ping in his heart when he heard that and decided to cut in to pay is own, personal respects to the elder. “Teacher, you’re…looking able.”
Bate resisted the urge to roll his eyes from said comment and stood up to face his old student. “I am, though….” Bate paused and noticed how tired Meta looked, “The way your slouching your wings, I’m assuming you’re not.”
Kirby’s cheek puffed up in anger and looked up at Bate. “Teacher wouldn’t have been so tired if he slept like he was supposed to. He was up all night flying us here!!"
“That’s because you wouldn’t stop whining.” Meta corrected, irritation lingering in his voice. Bate took notice and stretched out one of his own wings to motion the tired Puff to his old room,
“Why don’t you get some rest, then. I’m sure that long flight did quite a number on you.”
“But-“ Meta tried to stop, but Bate shook his head.
“Gumball, what have I told you about getting proper rest?” He lectured, “That’s the one thing I’ve always stressed about to you and Arthur over the past 2,000 some years. Now stop arguing and go.”
Meta’s wings completely faltered at that point, and he gave a small sigh, “I...was hoping we could catch up.”
Bate withdrew his snappy tone once he heard that. “And we will, don’t fret over that.” He smiled and reassured his worrisome student, “Once you’re well rested, I’ll take you and Kirby out so we can all catch up. I’m also eager to know all the shenanigans you’ve been up to over the last 4 months. But for now…..”
Bate opened the door and nudged him in. “You deserve a break.”
“And Kirby?”
Bate waved his hand, “I’ll watch over him, besides….” The elder slightly smirked under his mask, "I’m pretty sure you were much more of a handful as a child than he could ever be.”
Meta’s brow furrowed, and he slammed the door upon hearing his snarky remark. He could’ve sworn he heard Bate laugh on the other side, and the navy Puff blushed in embarrassment even more.
“Oh, Teacher…..” He softly mumbled to himself as he started to take off his armor to turn in for the evening.
—--
Kirby’s wing perked when he saw the elder walking out of the hallway, and ran towards him. “Is Teacher sleeping?”
“Quite so.” Bate said as he made his way back into the living room, “So for now, why don’t we keep our voices low so we don’t wake him.”
Kirby put his hands over his mouth and gave a small nod. Following Bate, the little Puff grabbed his backpack he brought along and started to unzip it as he took a seat next to his grandfather.
“I got a gift for you~” Kirby smiled and started to rummage though the yellow, star shaped bag, “….A lot of gifts, actually.”
Bate looked on as the little Puff pulled out a handful of miscellaneous trinkets, drawings and photos.
‘Oh.’ The elder mused from the sight of it all. Kirby was truly a delight.
Kirby shuffled through all of them, and tried to find the best gift to give to him first. When he finally decided, Kirby held up a polished blue, star-shaped stone and handed it to him.
“I found this stone that looked like your Warp Star! Teacher helped me polish it so it looks all shiny and sparkly.” He said and placed it in his hand.
Bate inspected the shimmering stone, a small blush forming on his face from the child’s kind gesture, “What a thoughtful gift. I’ll be sure to place it right next to my Warp Star later today.”
Kirby beamed upon hearing that and started handing him everything else he brought. Many of them were drawings that he drew over the months, and the others were a few photos of the trio when Bate paid a visit to Pop Star last year.
“That was when we celebrated my birthday, remember?” Kirby pointed to one of them,
“I remember,” Bate smiled and looked through the stack of photos. How times flies; it’s already been another year. Kirby’s grown so much, and it truly was a shame he couldn’t see him more often.
“Ummm…..” Kirby quietly shuffled in his seat as he watched the elder go through the photos, “Grandfather Bate?"
Bate set the stack of picture next to the small pile of gifts once he was done and gave him his full attention, “Yes?”
He watched as the little Puff shyly fiddled with his backpack. His mood greatly changed as he became more conflicted, and Bate wondered what could’ve suddenly caused such a thing. A few minutes passes, and Kirby faced the elder. With much hope in his voice, the warrior asked him for a very…..special request.
“Do…you think you could move to Pop Star with us?”
“Move to Pop Star?” Bate repeated,
“Hm! We only get to see each other a few times out of the year....” He voice started to get softer, “I don’t like that we live so far apart, and, umm.…..I r-really miss you during those times…"
Bate could understand well the young warrior’s troubles. He too misses him and Meta greatly during the long months they’re away. While most of his comrades settled back in Kalmari, Meta was one of the few who took a different path. Once Kirby came along, he made the hard decision to raise and train the boy where he originally found him- Pop Star. Bate understood and gave him and Kirby his best wishes to their new home, though of course, that doesn’t stop the trio from being a bit saddened from their lack of time spent together.
Bate gave a small pat on the warriors head, “Oh, I know it can be hard at times, but you have Meta, and he has you.”
“I know..but…wouldn't it be better if we saw each other every day? We can all play and train and never have to travel far anymore."
“That would be quite something, wouldn’t it,” Bate chuckled at the thought, “While Pop Star would be a wonderful place to live….it wouldn’t be quite like Kalmari.” The elder explained, “My home is here, and I don’t think I could ever leave behind what it’s given me for all these years."
“O-oh….” Kirby’s wings lowered from his reply,
“There’s no need to be sad,” He smiled, “I know we don’t see one another often, but that makes the time we do spend together all the more special. Here- let me show you something,”
Bate got up whilst carrying all of his new gifts, while Kirby quickly followed behind. The elder opened the door to his room, and gently placed everything on his bed. Kirby flapped his wings to help him get on the bed, and the little Puff watched as Bate walked to his desk before setting down a large, blue album.
Kirby tilted his head when he saw it, and looked over at Bate,
“Go ahead,” He encouraged, and pushed it closer, “Open it,"
The pink Puff lifted the cover and saw-
“Oh?” Kirby saw what seemed to be various photos of his grandfather. Each one, however, had someone different standing by his side. Kirby looked on as Bate spoke,
“My friends, family, past students….many who have left this world or moved far, far away like you.”
Bate pointed to one of the pages, “Students that I’ve took on once your teacher left for the war. Many I have not seen nor heard from ever again, but….”
Bate flipped to another page filled with various post cards and photos next to them, “There are those who still keep in contact. After so many years, I’m happy and joyous to know they’ve started a whole new life from the one that began in Kalmari.”
Kirby began looking through the photos, each student quite different from the last, “Don’t…you ever miss them?”
“Of course I do, but if they’re doing well, like how Meta and all your uncles are, then I couldn’t be happier. And that how it is with you.”
Bate smiled and flipped further to one of the last pages. An array of photos of containing the little warrior caught Kirby by surprise, and he glanced back at the elder,
“If I’m sad, I look back at these photos. They remind me of all the fond memories we’ve spend together. Each one carries a special memory. And when you finally visit again, I’m thrilled that all of us can make new ones to replace the old."
Bate held up the pictures Kirby brought, and set them on top of the book, “Wanna help me pick out a few so we can put them in the album?"
“Yes!” Kirby’s wings fluttered with joy and gave an eager nod, “Oh! Can I have my own album so I can save a bunch of photos like you?”
Bate’s eyes flashed a bright yellow, and agreed, “Of course. Let’s go into the living room and I’ll help make you one.”
—--
Meta slightly groaned when he sat up after resting the entire morning and afternoon. He looked at the clock hanging on the wall and hastily fumbled out of bed when he realized he slept the whole day away! He dashed out of the room and called out to the elder,
“T-Teacher! Why didn’t you wake me-“
Meta stopped mid sentence when he saw the pair in the living room, sleeping. Kirby was sprawled out on one of the couches, wings slightly hugging the small body, while Bate was resting his head on the living room table. Both had photos, construction paper and lots of art supplies scattered around them. Meta couldn’t help but smile when he walked closer and saw what the two have made,
‘It…seems like you’ve done a great job helping Kirby,' Meta thought as he, too, had to deal with the warriors nags and pleas of wanting Bate to move.
The little pink album sitting across the large blue one caused him to greatly relax. Even after all these years, his old mentor still has that special charm to him. A charm even Meta wasn’t able to maintain and preserve for very long when it came to a younger crowd.
The knight quietly made his way out of the room to let the pair rest. Tomorrow would be just as fine, he thought to himself.
“Enjoy your fond memories for today,” He smiled and headed back to his room,
“Tomorrow we’ll make new ones together."
