-Corn Syrup-
(Ramset / Falspar)
"I don't understand why we have to write a report about Kalmari." Meta whined to the other warriors sitting in the room.
Instead of their usual training this week, Meta and the other four were assigned a written report on the history of Kalmari. Everyone seemed to be content about it....except Meta, that is.
"It's not all about fighting, Meta." Arthur scribbled a few words on his paper. "We need to know proper grammar and spelling too, y'know."
Meta rolled his eyes at Arthur's goody two-shoed response. "But this is boringggg!!! I wanna go fight, not write a report!"
"Ah, shut up and write! You're annoying everyone!" Arthur snapped.
"I am not!" He threw his pencil at him. "And if you care about this paper so much, then leave and go to another room!"
Arthur stood up and smirked. "I might as well." He held up the paper and flashed it in front of Meta. "I just finished."
----------------------
-The next day-
"Alright, Gumball, please read your paper to us."
Meta stood in front of the small audience consisting of his friends and teachers. He nervously looked at them before staring at his paper.
"Ummm...K-kalmari was f-founded by-"
"Boo! Quit stuttering!" Arthur shouted from the crowd. Meta glared at him and spoke louder to mute his booing.
"A W-WARRIOR BY THE NAME OF-"
"BOOOO!! LET SOMEONE ELSE GO INSTEAD!!"
"AND HE AND HIS FOLLOWERS SETTLED-"
"META, BOOOOO!!!"
The tiny Puffball threw down his paper and tackled Arthur. "Teacher!! He keeps interrupting me!!!! Tell him to stop!!"
"Hey! Get off of me! I didn't do anything wrong!"
"Did too!"
"Did not!!"
"DID TOO!!"
"DID NOT!!!"
"QUIET!!!!"
Bate grabbed the bickering Puffballs to silence them. "Arthur, if you're so eager to talk, then go present your report."
"Fine, I'll be glad too!" He boasted, "And it'll be 10x better than Meta's report."
Arthur grabbed his paper and stood in front of the crowd. He cleared his throat and held out his paper to read it.
"The Town of Kalmari was founded in the year-"
"BOOOO!!! Arthur, you suck!!!" Meta yelled. "Booo!! BOOOO-H-HEY! OOOOWWW!! TEACHER, HE'S HITTING ME!!!"
Everyone watched as the two Puffballs started to wrestle. Both reports were quickly reduced to small shreds of paper. Bate covered his face in disbelief.
'This can't be happening....'
"WOOOOOO!" Ramset yelled and pumped his fists in the air. "And I thought this whole 'report' thing was gonna be a total snooze fest." He turned around and nudged Bate.
"Nice idea, Wheezy. We should have report days more often."
----------------------
"What you did was completely out of line!" Bate scolded the two, newly injured Puffballs. "All I wanted was a nice presentation, but no- both of you had to ruin it by acting like wild, unruly animals!"
Arthur and Meta lowered their heads in shame. "We're sorry...."
"Sorry doesn't cut it this time." He handed both of them a pen and paper. "Instead of it being one page like before, both of you are going to be writing a five page report for me."
"Whaaaat?" Both whined in unison. "That's not fair!!"
"Yeah? Well life isn't fair." He turned around and headed to the door. "Besides, you have nothing better to do while staying in the hospital."
With that, Bate shut the door and left the two to re-write their report.
----------------------
"Hey, Bate?"
Bate looked up from the report he was currently reading. "Yeah, what's wrong?"
Seeing as the incident earlier today was a complete train wreck, Gordon and Bate decided to read the other three reports instead of having them present it.
"Take a look at Falspar's report." He handed him the piece of paper.
"Hm? Why, is something wrong with it?"
"Ummm, yeah. Just read the first few sentences...you'll know."
"Oh, ummm...okay?"
Bate took the paper and started to read it. It didn't take him long to notice the problem. He set the paper down and looked at Gordon.
"I see it...."
"So, what do we do?" Gordon scratched his head. "Should we tell Ramset?"
"Seeing as he had the same problem years ago, yes. We'll talk to him about it tomorrow."
----------------------
"My little Falspar....illiterate? Preposterous!"
He grabbed the paper from Bate and read through it. "I can still understand what he's saying in his paper. There's a difference, y'know."
"We're not here to nit-pick, Ramset. The point is, his grammar is way below average." Gordon grabbed the paper from his hands and handed it back to Bate.
"We were thinking you could help him in this category." Bate suggested. "If anyone can relate, it's you."
Ramset shook his head when he was asked such a task. "No....I can't."
"Can't? But why?"
"It's....nothing. Just, can you do it?
"No. You're his mentor, Ramset, and it's high-time you know what that word stands for."
"But...."
"You're still refusing to do it?" The elder started to raise his voice. "Is it because you don't care?"
"W-wait....that's not what I mean."
"Then what?! He needs you, and you're turning your back on him! Quit being selfish and do something about it!"
"SHUT UP, BATE!" Ramset snapped back. "I do care, alright! It's just...." He turned away from the pair and wiped the newly formed tears falling from his face.
"What's he going to think when I tell him I couldn't read or write until I was 2,500, huh?"
Bate and Gordon didn't respond.
"He looks up to me, and if I tell him that...then...well..." He started to softly whisper. "What happens if he doesn't want me to be his mentor anymore?"
"..........."
"..........."
*PUNCHHHHHHHHH!!!!*
Ramset fell back from the sudden punch to the back of his head. He quickly sat up and glared at Bate. "H-hey! What was that for?!!"
"For being an idiot, you idiot." He bent down and locked eyed with the Sasuke. "Why would you think such a thing? Falspar would never think any less of you if you told him that."
"But you don't know for a fact...."
"Oh, believe me, I do." Bate smiled at his clueless friend. "He looks up to you because you're able to relate to him so well. Falspar is just like you, to my misfortune. He has the same prankster, outgoing, dangerous personality. If anything, he'll look up to you even more because you've been in the same position as him. He won't be embarrassed or feel like an outcast when you tell him....because he has you, his mentor, to help him through every step."
Ramset sat on the floor, still absorbing the elder's words. Bate waited a few minutes before extending his hand to his comrade.
"Now, I'll ask again. Will you help Falspar?"
"......I will. Thanks, Bate." Ramset grabbed his hand and smiled at the Puffball. "Who knew you were so deep with words."
"Don't get used to it." He handed him Falspar's report. "Just go talk to him."
"Sure, whatever..." He took the paper, but faced Bate again. "Oh, but before I do that..."
*PUNNNNNCH!!*
Gordon gasped in shock when he saw Ramset punch Bate straight in the face. Bate fell back and passed out from the impact.
"W-what the hell, Ramset?!!" Gordon shouted.
"What? He punched me first...payback, y'know?"
"But he didn't even punch that hard!! You completely broke his mask and knocked him out!"
"Oh....Oops...."
Ramset ran to Bate and removed the cracked mask from his face. He poked him a few times to see if he'd respond. Nothing.
"Yeah...ummm...I think I should go...." He started to back away from the pair. He knew Bate would kill him if he gained consciousness.
"Tell Bate I'm sorry, and that I'll pay for his dental bills when he wakes up."
