Gumball Warrior

-Burnt Bread-
(Pyrell / Drani)

The world doesn’t care.

The world doesn’t care if you’re only a child. They turn a blind eye; ignoring the fact you’re malnourished- begging and pleading for any scraps of food, handouts or anything they could possible give.

No one cares.

They don’t care if you were beaten, abused, abandoned or alone. They don’t care if you lost your only family member and now have to fend for yourself and your ill friend.

They just don’t care.

Pyrell knew. When times were tough, and he had to break a few rules to survive, he knew all too well that they don’t give a second thought who you were. They don’t stop and think as they’re beating you to a bloody pulp for stealing that maybe/ just maybe/ there’s a reason why you had to do it. A endeavoring, heart wrenching story that goes unheard as you try to escape back into the safety of the forest.

A story no one cares about.

With a bated breath and a newly gained black eye, Pyrell hastily made it back to the thickets of the forest where he lost sight of the storeowner. He leaned against the base of one of the trees, and with a shaky hand Pyrell lifted the lone, loaf of bread in his hand. A small smile formed in his face, and Pyrell quickly dashed through the forest as he headed to where his only friend was residing.

“Drani,” He called out, “Drani, I'm back,”

The frail bird opened her eyes, but didn’t speak a word as she saw the battered bruises and scrapes on her Master.

“M-my Lord…” She spoke but was quickly hushed when the bread was shoved in front of her.

“Look, I got food.” He smiled,

Drani looked at the bread for less than a second before focusing back on her Master. Pyrell saw, so he picked her up and gently placed her on his head so she couldn’t see his wounds. He grabbed the bread and handed it to her.

“Eat,”

“What about you?” She said,

“There’s no need. I ate before I got here.”

Drani knew he was lying. “B-but….”

“You need to eat to get your strength back. Now hurry up before it gets stale.”

The little Guardian didn’t bother fighting back and quietly nibbled on the loaf. “Thank you, my master…."

It’s been a few days since the pair…or rather Pyrell last found a suitable meal for them to eat. Pyrell, however, tends to give most of what he could find to her as she fell ill ever since they fled their home a few months after Bero’s death. He claims she needs it more than he does, and he’d been fine as long as she’s okay.

“H-how is it?” Pyrell cautiously asked,

Drani gave a small chirp of bliss when she swallowed the perfectly seasoned bread. “Delicious, my Lord…” She lifted the remaining half with her tail and lowered it to his face. “Here, you eat the other half.”

Pryrell shook his head, “You won’t be able to get better unless you eat all of it.”

“I’m feeling better,” She tried her best to flap her wings to show,

“And you’ll feel even better than before if you finish it.” He said and pushed her tail back. “I’ll be fine.”

Drani frowned and knew Pyrell wouldn’t budge. She finished the other half of the bread before quietly thanking the Leo again. Once she was done, she jumped off of her master’s head and focused on what caught her attention when he first arrived.

“Does….it hurt?” She asked as she lifted her tail and stroked his bruised cheek.

Pyrell slightly winced, but quickly gained back his composure so she wouldn’t worry, “It’s...nothing.”

Drani wasn’t convinced. “Please don’t lie. What happened?"
