Blue Honey
(Siku / Kumo)

With a bored sign, Siku gazed into the bleak sky from the sled she was sitting in, and paid no mind to the town she and her father arrived in. He just finished an escort mission, and both were about to set off home once he receives payment.

She wasn’t particularly fond of South Nova- it’s too plain, too cutthroat, and a bit too boring for her liking. It’s nothing like West Nova where she’s constantly spoiled with gifts and treats by her grandpas. She misses them dearly, and wishes she could stay with them instead of having to visit South Nova….

“Siku!” Rupion calls. “Hop off, snow-pea. How about we check out the shops before heading back home. We can pick up some nuts, and sweet jam while we’re here. You mother loves the Blizzard Bee jams, let’s surprise her!”

Siku…is uninterested. Another thing about South Nova- their food can’t hold a candle to Kalmari Town. Burger stand, sushi bars, candy shops, Siku doesn’t have to travel far when she’s craving a particular meal. South Nova on the other hand….fish, berries, nuts, meat. One can hardly call it cuisine.

“Ah…sure, dad…” Siku removers herself from the sled and followers her father into the plaza. The Frozen Sector of South Nova homes the largest plaza, and trading district- it’s always bustling, and always swarming with its native inhabitant, the Blizzard Bees.

“Oh! There’s the jam. Want to help me pick out a few jars?”

“A-ah, no thanks, dad. I…ah, want to look around a bit before we leave.”

“Alright, snow pea.” He reaches over and ruffles her hair. “Let me know if you’d like anything.”

----------------------------------

Siku wanders through the plaza, looking at various shops that homes a multitude of various spices, pelts, weapons and food. The Ice Leo village is basically the same, but a bit smaller. Still, it passes the time, so Siku continues to aimlessly look around.

“O-oh! Hello there!”

Siku looks up and gives a small wave before going  back to looking around.

“Ah- I’m not sure if you remember, but your dad is the one who escorts my family to various trading sites.”

She gives a small hum of acknowledgment, and continues to look through the shelves of various spices. “Yes, you’re Kumo. Yongest son of the eastern Blizzard Bee honey tribe.”

“O-oh…” He stammers. “You know me?”

“I know everyone my dad trades with.” She speaks as she continues to wander through the store. She may not prefer South Nova, but she knows just about everything there is about their village’s trading system, and who they do business with.  “You’re a very valuable asset for us Leos.”

“A-ah…I..I guess so, huh?” He lets out a small laugh. “If you put it that way, I mean. So, um…are you planning to be a bodyguard like him? I heard from your father you easily passed the Ice Leo trials- a-ah! Congratulations, by the way!”

Siku gives another small hum. “I’m…not sure. I kinda prefer my home in West Nova, to be honest.”

“O-oh…” He replies. “Well, umm…if you ever decide to, we’d love to hire the daughter of the fierce Scorpion knight. Our jars of blue honey are considered a delicacy in all of the Novas.”

Siku watches as he heads to one of the shelves, and grabs a jar at the very top. It’s a dark blue hue in color- a much darker shade than the rest of the jars on the shelves.

“H-here, a gift!” He stammers. “I hope we can be better acquainted!”

Siku blinks in surprise and gently takes it from his hand. “O-oh…thank you? I mean, you really don’t have to-“ Even she knows the worth of Blue Honey.

“It’s fine, please enjoy it with your family. And we hope to continue doing business with your village.”

----------------------------------------

“There you are, Siku- oh, what’s in your hands?”

Siku lifts of the jar to show him.  “It was a gift from one of the Blizzard Bee tribes you escort. Kumo gave it to me.”

“Nova, a jar like this is quite the rarity.” He speaks as he takes it from her hand. “Such deep blue in color. It takes over 5 years to develop such a hue, as well as using a certain, rare types of foliage.  Curating such a delicacy is no easy task. Hm, did his family request my services?”

She shakes her head.

“Hm…” Rupion ponders for a brief moment before heading back. “Let’s double check, just to be on the safe side.

----------------------------------------------

Siku did not expect to hear a fierce argument when she and her father arrived.

“Do you know how much we could’ve traded for that jar?!!” A voice reprimanded.

“How do you accidently give it away, are you stupid?!!” Another voice chimes in.

“What in Tundra’s name is wrong with you?!!” Someone yells.

“Ah- Pardon for my intrusion.” Rupion’s voice causes everyone in the shop to look his way. Siku peeks in to see Kumo dog piled by his three older brothers. They all get up when they realize who it is, and what he’s holding in his arm.

“Oh! Sir Rupion!” The eldest brother greets. “I wasn’t aware it was you who Kumo gave the jar to. Please, accept our apology. We didn’t know-“

“It’s quite alright.” He waves it off. “That’s actually the reason why I’m here. You see, my daughter was the one who received it. The two of us wanted to confirm if you were requesting my services for such a generous offering.

The three brothers look dumbfounded at first, then quickly back at Kumo before the room began to fill with the sound of buzzing laughter. Rupion was not expecting such a reaction, but still placed the Jar on the counter to return it.

“O-oh, no. We’re not in need of any services right now.” Th eldest tries to say  it with a straight face as the other two tease their younger brother. “P-please, Siku is free to keep the jar, isn’t that right, Kumo?” He calls out.

Kumo doesn't respond. In fact,  he doesn't even make eye contact with them, and just focuses on the floor while being badgered by the others.

------------------------------------

“Won’t your mother be surprised!” Rupion says as he gently wraps the jar in a fur pelt before placing it in the sled. “She absolutely loves blue honey; it was one of the first gifts I got her when we started dating!” He muses. “My precious plum queen deserves only the best!”

“U-uhhgg, gross, Dad.” She makes her way into the sled, and fastens herself in.

“Kumo is quite generous for gifting you such a delicacy! Maybe you should join me next time they need assistance.”

The sled begins to move as Rupion begins to pull it all the way back home. Suki looks behind at as the plaza fades in the distance. Siku always preferred West Nova- the weather is better, the food is better, the stores are better. Nothing could compare to her home in Kalmari Town….

“Well…maybe.” She quietly speaks as she burrows into the pile of pelt. Her words, and a shy smile on her face goes unnoticed by her father.

Maybe there are some things worth visiting again.
