-Birds Don't Swim-
(Bate / Meta)
"Bate, you can't spend the whole day sleeping." Ramset said as he tried to pull his friend out of bed. "C'mon, we're all taking the day off to go to the beach."
The elder didn't budge and mumbled into his pillow. "I'm not going, Ramset. Get out and leave me alone."
The Sasuke shook his head from the elder's stubbornness and continued to pull the blanket away from him. Unfortunately, Bate was much stronger than him, so his efforts were fruitless. Ramset huffed and crossed his arms. "Your age is starting to show, y'know."
"I don't care." He lifted his arm and pointed to his door. "Now leave."
Ramset sighed and walked towards the door. "Fine, fine..." He stepped out into the hallway and took a deep breath to call for help.
"GORDON!!!" He shouted. "BATE'S NOT GETTING UP!!"
Bate groaned in frustration. "Why do you have to be so damn obnoxious?!!"
"Takes one to know one." He smirked as he stepped aside to let Gordon in.
"Bate," Gordon went over and ripped the blanket away from the Puffball. "Don't you want to come with us?"
"I don’t, actually. Out of everyone, you should know the reason why!” The elder snatched the blanket from his hands and curled himself in a ball.” "Now leave me alone!"
Gordon looked back at Ramset who responded with an unsure shrug. He knew he couldn't force his friend to go if he didn't want to, so he motioned Ramset to leave his room.
"Okay, Bate...I guess we'll be going then."
Bate didn't respond.
"It's a shame," Gordon grabbed his door handle to shut it. "Meta really wanted to see you. He even bought you something for the occasion."
Gordon mentally counted down from 5 before Bate finally spoke up.
"Gumball?" Bate lowered the covers from his face.
The Gordo smirked and nodded to his reply. "Yes. In fact, he's waiting in the living room right now…..but since you don't want to go, I'll break the news to him."
"W-wait." Bate held out his hand to stop him.
"Yes?" He cheerfully turned around to face him.
"Just...." The elder stubbornly looked away. "Fine, I'll go...just let me grab my things."
"Perfect." He clasped his hands together. "We'll be waiting for you out front."
--
"Did he say yes?" Ramset asked Gordon as they both made their way back to the living room.
"Of course! You know he can't say no when it comes to those five."
"Ah, so you used them as bait. Good thinking." He snickered. "Ah, but I'm curious, though....why didn't he want to go in the first place? Doesn't he like the beach?"
Gordon shook his head and lowered himself to Ramset's level. He made sure no one was listening and quietly whispered to him.
"It's not that he hates the beach. It's just....he hates the ocean."
"The ocean?" Ramset questioned, "Why?"
"Ah...well...." Gordon hesitated to tell him, but eventually caved. "Bate's not a very good swimmer....he sinks."
"Really?" Ramset was shocked, "But I see him swimming in Kalmari Lake all the time."
Gordon shook his head. "It's not swimming if you can touch the ground below, Ramset. He always stays near the edge...haven't you ever noticed?"
"Huh, not really, but I'll take your word for it." He shrugged. "Just let him stay on shore, then. No one's forcing him to swim."
-----
Ramset bit his tongue when he saw what Meta bought Bate. "Ah, jeeze, I spoke too soon..."
Meta lifted the giant inflatable ring over his head. "Do you think Teacher will like it?!"
"Oh...." Gordon gave a nervous smile at the group. He knew Bate was going to kill him when this whole thing was over. "Y-yes! I'm sure Bate will love it."
