Bate did NOT take the news of her death well. Even though he is seriously injured, he's still able to move and pin Mara with enough force to crack her mask. Words can't describe what Bate's feeling right now after hearing what Mara told him. He's furious, he's in pain, and he's heartbroken he was unable to protect her. Knowing that Ellie was thinking of him during her final moments completely broke him. Bate has been pulled through the mud after Ellie's passing. He was hospitalized, became depressed, he drank, and he neglected not only his health, but his home and friends.
Everything terrible that happened in his past was taken out on the one who killed his happiness. Forgiveness is a powerful, but extremely hard thing to do. Mara killed Ellie- his everything. Can forgiveness even be an option to Bate at this point?
