A Warp Star's Song
Chapter. 1- Dear Kana
“Okay, you can open your eyes, Kirby.”
The child quickly removes his hands covering his face, and gasps in awe when he sees his very own room! Swirl of colorful stars are hand painted on the ceiling, a large bed with a star pattern quilt is next to his window, alongside a wooden chest filled with various toys. He looks over at his parents who give him an encouraging nod to go and explore, which the little warrior does soon after.
From his closet, to under his bed, to his wall of drawings, to his mountain of toys, to the various photos they put on his wall- the warrior looks over every possible thing. For a toddler, he wants to make sure nothing is missing.
Meta and Kes watch as Kirby continues to look around. It was a rather large project, but the pair knew it was well worth. The cheerful reaction from Kirby says it all.
“You sure you won’t miss this room?” Meta speaks, the eyes under his mask glace towards the Leo.
“It’s a nice room, but I’m sure Kirby will put more use into it. Besides, I suppose sharing a room with you won’t be too bad. Just don’t complain when the temperate isn’t to your liking."
“I’ll try, but I make no promises.” He gives his partner a grin before continuing to watch Kirby. The child is on the final wall of the room; it was one of his favorite walls to decorate, Meta thinks fondly as he watches on.
Kirby stares at the wall fill with photos. Several of them are of him and his cousins- many of them shot by his Aunty Petta. A few are of him and his Grandfather Bate, while a majority are of him and his parents. Kirby couldn’t help but smile as he looks over each and every one of them. Until….he comes across the next photo that comes to view. In the center of the collage are several photos of him with someone he never met before. It was a bird. A light purple bird with him in her arms. Both are smiling, and Kirby’s heart feels strange for a moment when he locks eyes with hers. Something about her seems familiar…..but why?
“Kirby, what’s the matter?” Kes’ voice cuts in when she notices he hasn't moved in over 5 minutes. She picks him up, and both look at the photo he was so fixated on. Kes warmly smiles as she looks at the photo. “We found a lot of pictures of you and Kana. Do you like them?”
“Kana?” He questions, looking back at the photo. His mind drew a blank as he tries to think back to any sort of interaction with this particular bird.
Nothing came up.
Not one memory….
But why? Why does he look so happy in the photos? Surly that alone would grant him one memory….
But….
Eventually, he looks back at Kes with troublesome frown on his face. “Can...we take them down. I don’t like them.”
Kirby nuzzles the elder for comfort as he turns away from them. He knows both worked really hard to decorate him room, and as much as he loves it, something about those particular photos has made him feel uneasy.
He feels her lightly pat his head, and she walks over to Meta to place him in his arms. She walks back to the section of photos and starts to take down the photos that had her in it.
“If you don’t like them, then of course we’ll take them down.” She turns back and gives a reassuring nod to the child.
“But Kes-“ Meta cuts in.
Kirby could sense his dad isn’t as accepting with the idea, and his heart starts to tremble. Is it because he said he doesn’t like them? Is he supposed to know who she is? Why does the tension in the room suddenly grow heavy all of a sudden. With wings lowering, he shakes his head and tries to call out to stop her.
“A-ah, w-wait, you don’t have to-“ He squeaks, but Kes intervenes before he is able to finish.
“Meta, please help me put them back in our room.” Kes’ voice is calm. With the photos in her grasp, she walks out of the room and motions Meta to follow. He gently sets Kirby down and hurries to Kes’ side as they walk out of the room.
Kirby toddles to their door once it’s closed, and presses his ear as he tries his best to listen to the conversation they were having.
“Meta, if Kirby doesn’t feel comfortable having them, don’t make it seem like he should keep them up.”
“I….but….” He hears Meta hesitate. “Do you think it’s for the best? Kana was everything to Kirby.”
“I know…” Kes’ voice expresses the same concern. “And maybe that’s why he was upset when he saw them. The loss still hurts.”
‘Hm…” Meta gives a nod. “Seeing the photos must have opened wounds that haven’t properly healed. Should we talk to him about it?” Meta suggests.
“Yes, I think that would be for the best. He hides it so well, I didn’t think he was still mourning the loss.”
This is all so confusing for Kirby. Mourning? Hurt? He's not feeling any sort of grief. Is...he supposed to?
The child quickly hurries back to his room when he hears the footsteps of his parents shuffling to the door. What should he say to them? What should he do?
From his place in bed, Kirby stares at the wall where the photos were hung. The weird feeling Kirby had moments prior starts to return when he focused on the blank spaces. With a troubled frown, he burrows deeper in his blankets. He reaches for one of his pillows, and covers himself with it.
He really doesn't feel like talking right now.
